The biblical/historical/theological question of infant baptism is discussed.  A process is then developed for the discipling of parents to give them an opportunity to make a credible profession of faith at the time of their child's baptism.  The primary training is done by lay people.  A case study method was used in the evaluation of the program. The author is Episcopalian, and suggestions are made to adapt the model for any paedo-baptist denomination. Hymnody is used paradigmatically to demonstrate that worship and church administration are integrally related. The root meaning of 'liturgy' etymologically illustrates this point: leitourgia means 'the work of the people'. This paper suggests the thesis that worship and ministry are activities of all Christians (both clergy and laity). Church administration is the framework for effective ministry. A detailed decadal statistical study of its largest 200 churches was made along with demographic and other cultural data to illustrate the trends that are presently acting upon its ministry. Work with the parish's Christian Service Task Force prompted research leading to the use of a pastoral letter by Bishop Howard Hubbard, and to Robert Greenleaf's Servant leadership. A synthesis of these sources produced a role description of the parish priest as that of affirming, coordinating and facilitating the lay ministry by fulfilling a 'first among equals' role in the context of the parish council. Pastoral care, 'the cure of souls' (often in a one-to-one relationship between pastor and people), takes on a corporate, comprehensive dimension when it enables and equips laity for ministry. Pastoral care, the church and the world are all enhanced when the ultimate goal is not solely the care or cure of souls, but ministry itself.  Premises regarding each aspect of lay ministry are challenged by the results of a survey of fifty people involved in ministry, and follow-up interviews with fifteen.  Results suggest methods of enabling lay ministry that are supportive within a local church. Procedures included 1) an ongoing men's breakfast group to address faith and vocation and participation in a sermon series on the issue; 2) a Health Professionals' Convocation with 18 parishioners for an intensive examination of the same issue.  The results were undramatic: the Health Professionals' Convocation included enlightenment, confusion, controversy and sensitivity.  Of much greater impact were the sharing and interpreting around the event. Programmatic suggestions were referred to appropriate church boards.  An outgrowth of the Convocation, a sharing group on suffering, presently meets weekly. Charisma is defined as 'God's grace that motivates and enables Christians to minister in God's power'.  Romans 12:3-9 is the only list of 'spiritual gifts' that begins with the technical term Charismata. Distinction is made between 'offices' (Ephesians 4:11-12), 'manifestation of the Spirit' (1 Cor 12:7-11) and Charismata.  The hypothesis, 'as Christians learn what their spiritual gift is, they will be freed and equipped for ministry' is supported with surveys and interviews with 21 members of St John's Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles.
