The evaluation concentrates on leadership, the value of the family, parental ministry and the service of God's family. Emphasis is placed on the 'ministry of presence' in the work of the chaplain.  'Ministry of presence' is a legitimate aspect of the chaplaincy not only because it prepares for other forms of ministry but because of what such presence itself does. The project includes a description and analysis of the results of a three-stage effort to deal creatively with the training by which chaplains are integrated into the Army. This experiment incorporates the concept of 'ministry of presence' into the chaplains' training program. Models are: Niebuhr's Christ as transformer of culture, Dulles' church as mystical communion, and Niebuhr's minister as pastoral director.  The family may act as a small church.  The thesis states that it is appropriate to use the form of the Family Home Evening Program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in a United Presbyterian Church (UPC) using UPC content.  Twelve sessions were written. Seven LDS theological beliefs regarding families are considered and compared with UPC beliefs.  This presupposed that LDS theology gave more support to families than UPC beliefs. The thesis concludes that beliefs of one church are as strong for its members as beliefs of the other church are for its members. Immediate antecedents were the Anglican religious societies formed during the evangelical revival in England, the Holy Club experience of John Wesley and others in Oxford, and the bands into which Moravians divided their communities.  Each is analyzed.  The class meeting emerged from the evangelistic organizational activity of Methodists.  There is particular reference to the influence of Wesley's main doctrines of repentance, faith and sanctification.  Class meetings are compared to the religious societies, the Holy Club, and the Moravian bands, indicating both uniqueness and indebtedness to what was occurring elsewhere. Infrequent opportunity for Bible use with helpees by volunteer ministers did not provide the experience or justify the training needed to maintain proficiency. The project methodology evaluates the problems of the recruit, especially the impact of the military on his marital relationship. The paper describes the one day workshop and the welcoming dinner. Questionnaires describing situations which could occur at any church were sent to members of the congregation.  They were asked to rank up to three members with whom they would discuss the situation and to offer the reasons for their choices.  The results of the data collected show that there was an informal group of individuals who were perceived to be the decision makers.
