The author introduced to the seminary curriculum a course presenting social ministry tools and practices.  This paper offers a working definition of 'social ministry,' a review of that construct in Scripture and Church history, and an assessment of the likelihood of students becoming social ministry practitioners. Prohibiting factors include needed full-time salary/benefits, lack of secondary vocation option, lack of recognition and appreciation, perhaps a lack of status and identity, and pastors' own lack of boundaries and time management skills. At least three frames required change to highlight the need for bivocational pastors: symbolic, behavioral, and structural. An authenticating relationship was built through the survey follow-up and a bivocational handbook was produced. Using a feminist approach to qualitative methodology, nine diaconal ministers were interviewed to examine their reasons for choosing ordination.  Personal and systemic reasons emerged, including sense of calling, need for education and employment security, career development, contextual influences and church policies. Sexism and the marginalization of diaconal ministers were factors.  This dissertation analyses the tensions between hierarchical privilege and feminist perspective, and proposes recommendations for the revision of ministry leadership, particularly the re-vitalization of diaconal ministry as oriented towards the
