Using theologies on death and dying, Christian practices, as well as current books, journals, and first hand experiences, the project presents ways in which conversations on end-of-life are happening in society and in our faith communities. It also presents the deep need for these conversations to continue to take place and how we can support our faith leaders in having these conversations in our faith communities. The project proposes a workshop as a resource to help faith leaders and faith communities have general conversations on death and dying. The workshop is designed based on specific responses to surveys given to faith leaders in the Pennsylvania Southeast and Pennsylvania Northeast conferences of the United Church of Christ; interviews with 10 of these faith leaders and surveys to 5 congregations in this region. In those surveys, faith leaders identified what conversations on death and dying they have within their faith communities and also their desired resources and elements for a workshop for education in end-of-life issues and death and dying. The faith community members identified what conversations they have had in faith communities on death and dying and what information would be beneficial in future resources to support faith leaders in having conversations on end-of-life planning in their faith communities. An additional resource proposed in this project is an annotated bibliography of resources on death that faith leaders can use to increase comfort in having end-of-life conversations in their faith communities."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860328341569536,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:27:12.710Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b8cfe27a-7cf1-4c18-ada4-5d911a3671e0","accessControl_ssim":["60dfe985-985b-45c9-902e-5035272b21fc"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The pastor as a participant in decision-making relating to the funeral event"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["19f52a86-b98d-45c4-87e0-cf19b3272f96"],"hasLease_ssim":["e46db186-561d-43e1-ba65-9201f4e716c5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. No attempt is made to prove that there is a grief reaction to moving, nor to determine the extent to which such a reaction occurs in the mobility of society. Through an analysis of data drawn from interviews with a particular sample of married women who have moved, the quality and nature of the grief reaction is described. This description is formed by viewing the data collected through an understanding of the dynamics of grief presented in the first chapter. Assumptions that this study is significant for and has a potential contribution to make to the practice of ministry are as follows: (1) Recognition of the needs of persons is important to those who are involved in ministry…(2) Through the centuries the church has been considered a place of refuge and a repository of meaning. There is a traditional expectation that the pastor and the church have resources that are helpful to the bereaved and those who have suffered loss…(3) The mobility of persons confronts the Christian Church with an awesome challenge of relating to people who are moving from one community to another…"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860240406937600,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:48.849Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-12-18T16:56:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-12-18T16:56:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"047a25d0-3d55-457c-b67d-1c8d60dcf9e4","accessControl_ssim":["5ed9e142-a68d-4805-b7b7-49e24e0392db"],"depositor_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Equipping Selected Members of Springhill Baptist Church, Jonesboro, Louisiana, with Grief Recovery Care Skills to Minister to Parents whose Children have Died"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-12-18T16:56:41Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-12-18T16:56:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1341b67b-2672-470d-bb4f-6ce52b36b26c"],"hasLease_ssim":["dd60a9f3-897b-43f3-b51f-43d184a3b15d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dr. Mark Tolbert"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"location_tesim":["Louisiana"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The selected members who participated in the training were given the first opportunity over other associational church members. Preparations were made to solicit volunteers from the North Central Baptist Association (NCBA) if I could not reach Springhill’s membership recruiting goal. This preparation was unnecessary as Springhill took an active interest in the project.\r\n\r\nI researched children’s death-related data from local and international agencies that supported this project. The statistical data supported grief training at the layperson level. I studied both biblical and non-biblical death philosophies to gauge what people believed concerning the topic. Based on my research and learning, I wrote a grief recovery care curriculum that encompassed sermons, teaching lessons, and other pedagogical tools to equip selected members in grief recovery care. Dying is a lonely process owing to its nature as a process each must traverse by oneself, within one's self. The pain and suffering inherently present is the most private experience, but their causes demand public accountability. Current medical practice and technology, intentionality or unintentional, serve principally to needlessly prolong the dying process without any purposeful positive impact on the underlying disease process, and resulting on the dumping of the moral responsibility for the death of the patient onto the medically and theologically unprepared familial caregivers. A continuing litany of 'Patient Satisfaction Surveys' report 'Unmet Spiritual Needs' as a principal source of patient/caregiver dissatisfaction. By the end of the twentieth century, advances in medical life-support techniques have allowed the artificial extension of human life. However, this prolonged existence may usually presents increasing incapacities at the end-of-life. Death now medicalized and delayed, dying is now riddled with unwarranted, useless, and meaningless suffering and limited to no spiritual support. Yet physicians report, 'We can always keep doing things!' The tortuous journey of dying, for both patient and caregivers, is a destabilizing maelstrom of emotional pain, psychological terror, and physical suffering. Compounding the misery of the journey is the absence of the church, of spiritual support, resulting in unmet spiritual in many patients and families. The process of dying leaves patients and caregivers with feelings of loss, darkness, and disconnection. The focus of this project discovers and reports on the unmet spiritual needs of the dying from a true spiritual perspective, previously unreported in the literature."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/dissertations-theses/conversations-at-edge-life-unmet-spiritual-needs/docview/1794166970/se-2"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873263101149184,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:52:48.259Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:03:08Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:46:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5e8ff0c9-8376-4684-9a2d-4de543fbf4ad","accessControl_ssim":["5a3ca8a7-ef9e-4d55-8c45-42735a2ead33"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping Selected Members of Griffith Memorial Baptist Church, Jackson, Mississippi, in Ministry to Widowed Members"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:03:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:54:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["78469303-bf0f-4514-982b-3483e7f15445"],"hasLease_ssim":["952bcd8f-4cfc-4cc1-a27f-65565c27b4e1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Norris Grubbs Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"location_tesim":["Mississippi"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The project had three phases. First, the project director researched, gathered information, and organized an annotated bibliography that provided knowledge and resources for understanding widowed member ministry. Second, the project director wrote curriculum to equip selected members of GMBC for ministry to widowed members. Third, the project director equipped selected members of GMBC with the understanding of the importance of spiritual gifts in ministry to widowed members, with a concern for the needs of widowed members, and the skills to minister to widowed members.A pre-test was given to each member before the first session, and a post-test was given after the last session to measure the increased knowledge of participants who minister to widowed members. Six one-hour equipping sessions were conducted on Sunday evenings. After each session, the participants divided into small groups for twenty minutes, to discuss any questions, have time for prayer, and interject roleplay exercises. After the final session the director gave a post-test to the participants to measure what they had learned during the sessions. The director distributed commitment cards to challenge participants to minister to the needs of widowed with their giftedness."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5e492469-490e-44a3-90c1-17560a603bc2"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715467713052672,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:46:58.396Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:34:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:05:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a8ed6ee5-6140-4591-9164-7b965901c55d","accessControl_ssim":["c5e7f9f6-54d2-48e8-9c15-68d32854286c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a Pastoral Care Manual to Raise Awareness of Multicultural Death and Dying Rituals at Gwinnett Medical Center, Lawrenceville, Georgia"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:34:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:01:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["499f4752-204a-4a40-8e8c-99ab17933a35"],"hasLease_ssim":["4d04602a-8b87-4141-a6af-8eda094b93be"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Peter Kendrick"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["Georgia"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Among the pastoral care services offered at GMC, an examination of many hospital manuals showed a lack of information and resources on death and dying rituals and faith practices, especially for those with focus on the four leading religions: Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. A manual that centered on these four religious groups, along with providing information on religious death and dying rituals, would not only be helpful for new intern Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) chaplains and staff chaplains, but would also benefit the interdisciplinary medical staff in helping them treat patients and families with respect and dignity. In order to complete this project, the project director examined research in the field of pastoral care on the beliefs and rituals of four leading religions: Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. She also investigated significant time studying how to design and write a manual. The result was a comprehensive, but not exhaustive, manual about these four religions that focused on their history, beliefs, teachings, practices, and death and dying rituals. Furthermore, the project director personally interviewed a spiritual leader representing each of the four major religions presented in this document for their review and evaluation of the accuracy of its contents."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5e492469-490e-44a3-90c1-17560a603bc2"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791125041738416128,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:05:49.777Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:20:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:51:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8ab82a8e-56d0-45ea-a061-8541701a97ad","accessControl_ssim":["ce0a8cc3-710c-4216-bc01-2e37c24fe5b5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral care for the bereaved through the first memorial service"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:20:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:12:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["85c990cb-e172-4427-b03d-d7abfde9f877"],"hasLease_ssim":["a8bc2dc8-c2de-465c-ac25-3d5a81fb98dc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kyunglim Shin Lee"],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The author designed a particular form of the first memorial service to heal the wounded hearts of the bereaved. First, the author asked the bereaved families to prepare articles left by the deceased, which would allow them to remember their beloved parents, and then had the first memorial service in a chapel with the small group members to which the bereaved families belonged. The bereaved experienced the recovery of their wounded hearts by participating in the first memorial service, confirming that they were not completely separated from their parents, but still connected. The author conducted interviews and observations on two aspects - the daily life and the church life before and after the first memorial service - to track how the loss and grief of the bereaved families had been changed through the service. The author determined through the assessments that the first memorial service helped heal the wounded hearts of the bereaved and that they could play a positive role as members of the church community.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719506170347520,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:51:09.770Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":39,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
