Like other immigrants, Chinese families in North America experience more family problems than usual because of the complications brought about by migration. To develop a theology of family for the Chinese immigrant families in North America, three functions and three characteristics of family structure that are relevant to the context of their situation are incorporated. The family functions are procreation, stabilizing community, and individuation; the characteristics are adaptability to change, commitment to interdependence, and tolerance of diversity. These functions and characteristics are interrelated.This project concluded with the suggestion of a two-pronged approach in family ministry. First, the church is to intentionally apply a family perspective in everything that it does, be it worship, Christian education, Christian care, or mission. Stennis Naval Air Station for Christ. This project was comprised of two major components--seminars and outreach evenings. Seminars concentrated on military family needs, Naval Air Station regulations regarding visitors, and how to share one's faith. The writer measured positive cognitive and attitudinal changes in most all the participants. In response to this perceived need, three lay ministry teams were commissioned, and ongoing programs of support, education and nurture were developed. The programs, the process by which they were developed, the setting that inspired them, and the theological foundations they were built on, including theologies of community, ministry of the laity, Christian baptism, marriage and funeral, are included. In this volume, the author describes the development of a ministry of edification in which parents of preadolescents were challenged and equipped to communicate the difficult but important issues presented in Proverbs 1-9 to their children in developmentally effective ways. The family is defined not by a cultural or religious ideal or configuration, but by the purpose and functions of these Garden growth families that are to relate to God, others and self with mutual love and equal regard. The research uses a particular intergenerational educational nurturing model called family clusters and affirms families as domestic church. These families become nurturing centers of Garden growth family clusters in which each person within the family system becomes a gardener for each plant-person. The Church is presented as an extended family and healing community that should show the solidarity of the Lord that allows that abusive and oppressive patterns can be shown to be healed.  The contextual deterioration expressed by inadequate boundaries, out of control family system should be broken and overcome through interventions that propitiate change.
