The study highlights four themes: the decision to share the diagnosis with others, loss, the need for support from one's faith community, and commitment. They saw the family as the first church, and the greater congregation serving families in a way that strengthened families, churches and society's common good, in that order.  This thesis explores one enduring error which may have served to drive a tragically unnecessary stake into the heart of the Puritan vision.
