A sixty-eight item questionnaire measured the attitudes and opinions of the effects of alert duty (i.e. separation) on marriages.  Selected couples participated in a task-oriented support group which assessed the effects of alert duty on their own marriages. The hypothesis is that certain God representations are used to form beliefs that put persons at risk as either victims or perpetrators of family violence.  The paper uses two case studies to focus on three aspects of domestic violence: the physical, the psychological, and the sexual.  Rizzuto's God and Family Questionnaires are a diagnostic tool in this study. The project director led 'Cults and the Family' conferences in three states utilizing materials he produced.  Conference participants were pretested and posttested to measure knowledge acquired in the conferences.  Postconference and follow-up questionnaires also were submitted to participants. Teaching methods included didactic sessions, individual assignments, and group dialogue.  Experimental and descriptive evaluation methodologies were used with an experimental and a control group.  Personal growth was evaluated on the experimental group's cognitive and attitudinal awareness of the life-coping skills available to assist single parents in meeting their needs.
