(See Appendix K) The study of ministry with the frail elderly represents my continuing concern about the specific and unique needs of this group of individuals. The study is a pastoral essay about serious societal problems regarding the care of the frail elderly and a plea for church congregations to assist in solving the problems. The Ministry with the Frail Elderly (FEM) Study reflects concerns that are both prophetic and priestly. The study prophesies that the problems of ministry with the frail elderly are systemic in nature and that the magnitude of the problems will continue to grow. Relevant literature and demographics are used to convey the particulars of the problem. Secondly, this study suggests strategies and models for congregations to use to identify, nurture, and assist frail elderly…The purpose of the FEM study design is to describe the circumstances of ministry with the frail elderly by demographic statistics, by medical and health literature, and by interviews with pastors, health care staff, and the frail elderly themselves. Geographic limits are established for interviews to York County, Pennsylvania, the location of this researcher’s parish. The goal of Part I is to describe the complexity of the needs of the frail elderly; and secondly, to suggest strategies for a shared ministry. It discusses not only the elderly population demographics in the U.S., but also the necessity for ongoing provision of preaching and ministry to them. It examines the current literature and position of the Church on the provision of pastoral care at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. We also explores different biblical responses to the ongoing mystery of suffering, sickness, aging, and healing. How did some biblical characters grapple with their suffering? How did they perceive the goodness of God in the face of it? This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the genre and theological, contextual, and historico-cultural background of some biblical texts concerning suffering, aging, and healing. We will demonstrate the Church's understanding and renewal of preaching in the last fifty years through a review of current literature and official documents of the Church. Though this review will reflect the perspective of the Catholic Church, this chapter also offers an overview of what constitutes Christian preaching and what its rich history, renewal, and methodology have to offer the Christian Church in general. We examine the current practices and ministry of preaching at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. A review of current literature on preaching to the elderly population enriched the understanding of what it means to preach an effective homily to them. Chapter Five demonstrates a four-part workshop that will aid chaplains and ministers to be more effective preachers to the target population. The field work research methodologies included e-mail questionnaires, writing of seminar teacher and student manuals, receiving peer evaluation of curriculum, and recruiting, teaching, deploying, and evaluating volunteers through a mentoring process. The seminar taught foundations for spiritual care, understanding older adults, basic guidelines for visitation, and the skills of listening spiritual assessment, prayer, and the use of scriptures. The project succeeded in training 38 individuals and deploying nine volunteers who provided 315 visits to residents. The hypothesis of this project is that the training of nursing home ministry volunteers would improve religious services and visitation programs to residents. The methodology utilized is a combination of qualitative and quantitative research design which includes observations, interviews, surveys, and pre/post tests as methods of data collection. As reminiscing is a common characteristic among the aged, applying it in the preaching ministry and worship activity among nursing home residents can serve the purpose of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in many helpful ways. This MAP explains and presents examples of how reminiscing from the past in the lives of the residents draws forth vivid memories in their minds. Used as a method in preaching, these memories can also strengthen and deepen the faith of the aged individual who is nearing eternity. Six sermons modeling this preaching method were written and delivered to the residents of the Greenfield Manor in Greenfield, Iowa, between May and October in 2005. The project involved two groups of participants that were studied and evaluated. The diagnosis included dementia and Alzheimer's disease (Group A), and depression or serious medical or neurological illnesses (Group B).
