The author anticipated that the focus of spiritual direction on developing a personal relationship with God would effect a new sense of personal freedom and an ability to consider options and make decisions to change one's lifestyle and the course of one's future. Trainees, volunteer participant-observers, and the chaplain planned, carried out and evaluated the project.  Training sessions focused on biblical and theological understandings of the believer-priest and caring community concepts, psychological and theological aspects of the separation crisis, and helping skills.
