The curriculum emphasizes Martin Luther’s doctrine of vocation and the Priesthood of All Believers, and contemporary theological treatments of vocation by Miroslav Volf and Daryl Charles. It involved the enlistment of and ministry to persons who were struggling with distresses brought on by being forcefully terminated from their places of employment.  This was a specifically designed support group ministry. It is a concern that many churches have not come to terms with.  In Australia unemployment was a major concern in the early part of the 1980's.  This study looks at one major industrial city, namely, Wollongong in N.S.W. and considers the responsibility of the church to do ministry with the unemployed.  It raises the preliminary issues of consciousness raising within the church on the issues of unemployment.  It looks at economic, sociological, and theological aspects of unemployment and then proceeds to use the process of structural analysis as a tool in a workshop situation. The project describes five phases of development: 1) the establishment of a congregational unemployment task force; 2) the involvement of the Butler Unemployment Task Force (BUTF); 3) the incorporation of human resource agencies; 4) action taken by the BUTF on behalf of unemployed and underemployed; 5) the incorporation of the wider church. Three non-denominational, multi-racial churches and one para-church ministry were identified as groups interested in receiving training for future church-based support programs for first time job seeker and the working poor. It was hoped that this project would stimulate ongoing relationships between church pastors, church leaders and congregational members, the working poor and first time job seekers.
