Churches have been asking if the process of confirmation education (learning about one’s faith) is outdated and some even suggest confirmation is no longer needed. A Ministry of Presence: A Handbook for Mentors of Teens in their Searching Stage of Faith Formation examines the process of confirmation preparation before the rite of the church. This project suggests ways in which churches may offer an intergenerational faith journey utilizing adult mentors working alongside teenagers as they explore the multifaceted layers of their faith together. A questionnaire, group sessions with confirmation workers and personal interviews were used in the initial data collection in determining how churches are offering confirmation and what additional resources could be used to enhance current programming. Preliminary results determined that those providing confirmation education were dissatisfied with the process. A pilot mentor/teen confirmation program was created and implemented at Christ Church UCC in Elizabethtown, PA, stemming from my own discontent for available curriculum. Research also revealed a lack of solid resources for preparing and guiding mentors in the confirmation process. The result is a handbook for mentors utilizing the theology of Maria Harris’ work, Fashion Me a People. This is a resource which suggests faith formation is not reserved for a select few within a church but the work of the entire congregation. The handbook also contains suggested curriculum sheets designed for mentors and teens to be working side by side in their faith formation. A Ministry of Presence is designed to be a useful tool to empower mentors in the faith practice of cultivating lasting reciprocal relationships between the generations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860304943644672,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:50.397Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-22T19:22:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-23T13:42:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ee9f8ee3-2724-4db1-839b-f9ccd208c3b2","accessControl_ssim":["e464f09f-25fa-4c1b-a5f3-2afd8647bb85"],"depositor_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Impact of Emotional Intelligence on Decision-Making in Youth Within the Greater Grand Crossing Community of Chicago"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-04-22T19:22:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-23T13:42:35Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4a3fb9e2-b6f4-495a-8b1d-cffdb8c960f7"],"hasLease_ssim":["be984a71-2771-4eab-a1b9-14697e8c0f24"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity International University"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Through a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, the researcher implemented a six-week emotional intelligence program for fifteen African American high school students. The intervention consisted of two community excursions (a toy distribution service project and a bowling event) and four weekly coaching sessions focused on self-awareness, empathy, assertiveness, and heart-based decision-making.\r\n\r\nThe research was grounded in both theological and theoretical frameworks that emphasized the heart as the center of meaningful behavioral change, aligning with emotional intelligence principles. Data collection included pre- and post-intervention surveys, interviews, participant journaling, direct observation, and focus groups. Results demonstrated significant improvements in participants' decision-making approaches, with measurable growth in analytical thinking, reduced reliance on external validation, and increased decision confidence. Behavioral observations revealed enhanced social skills, empathy, and leadership emergence.\r\n\r\nThe findings suggest that developing emotional intelligence provides youth with effective tools to process trauma and make better decisions. This improvement was particularly evident in the dramatic increase in participant engagement between the first and second excursions. The project contributes valuable insights into addressing youth violence through heart-focused interventions rather than solely behavior-focused approaches, offering a model for community partnerships between law enforcement, schools, and faith communities to foster positive youth development in marginalized urban contexts."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"_version_":1830201071766601728,"timestamp":"2025-04-23T13:42:36.003Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-02-25T20:24:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-02-25T20:24:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3f6cc4ac-eaf7-43b5-a16b-fd39e26b6639","accessControl_ssim":["11459aa2-27e4-4764-89b3-ba46d3068f09"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["08597dde-c7b4-4418-93f5-45b9cba11a61"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["08597dde-c7b4-4418-93f5-45b9cba11a61"],"depositor_ssim":["hnus@vts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["hnus@vts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Why does God Encounter People? Despite affirming youth leadership, leaders have more often commodified children, teens, or young adult ministries rather than developing age-appropriate resources to support Gen Z and Alpha’s interest in spirituality. Age-segregation in U.S. Christian ministry contexts has limited teen’s participation in intergenerational conversations about encountering God, navigating cultural pluralism, and Christian spiritual formation. An over-emphasis on performance and hurry within U.S. evangelical and charismatic ministries has limited teens’ discernment, experiential understanding of God’s character, and ability to build healthy rhythms for life and ministry. Without sufficient modeling, support, and protection, teens have lacked opportunities to experience spirituality, form identities based on their experiences, and steward their unique gifts within community. Synthesizing the strengths of Spiritual Direction and Prophetic ministry may best equip teens to enter into the “search-encounter-transformation” process that has come to characterize contemporary Renewalist spirituality.\r\n\r\nUltimately, Latino/a/x approaches to community may inform more grounded spiritual practices in renewalist youth ministry contexts like Mosaic Church in Seattle, Washington. During a time of increasing U.S. social transformation and latinization, U.S. Latino/a/x communities’ approaches to belonging and social difference (mestizaje), shared testimony (testimonios), family (familismo), solidarity (solidaridad), life in community (en convivencia), and encountering God in everyday life (lo cotidiano) may support U.S. youth ministries to navigate change. Specifically, Latino/a/x Pentecostal patterns of utilizing testimony as a conduit for shared spiritual direction may influence renewalist ministry contexts like Mosaic Youth Ministry to develop a deeper sense of shared identity. Ultimately, my act of ministry project explored whether using Harvard Project Zero thinking routines in small group discussion could support a focus group of Mosaic teens to engage with elders’ testimonies latinamente. \r\n\r\nFor my act of ministry, I interviewed 4 Mosaic Church adults (18+) about an experience they had with God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit. From the interviews, I rewrote 3 case studies to share with Mosaic teens. Next, I designed a pre-test and post-test to measure teens’ vocabulary and background knowledge. I designed discussion questions based on Bloom’s taxonomy, teen’s lexile levels, Harvard Project Zero’s Connect, Extend, Challenge, Creative Questions, and Think, Puzzle, Explore thinking routines. I met with 6 middle and high school students (12-18) who had differing amounts of experience with spiritual encounter to discuss these encounter narratives over 5 weeks in Fall 2023. At the end, teens reflected on what they had received from the project and their remaining questions.\r\n\r\nThe results of this research demonstrate that responding to case studies within small group contexts can be an effective way to support teen’s vocabulary development about spirituality. Responding to case studies may support teens to generate questions about their own spirituality, identify their own interests, and connect with others. Additional research should explore how Latino/a/x Seattlite leaders’ insights and facilitation styles may improve future intergenerational conversations about Christian spirituality within Seattle. \r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/08597dde-c7b4-4418-93f5-45b9cba11a61?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["08597dde-c7b4-4418-93f5-45b9cba11a61"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["08597dde-c7b4-4418-93f5-45b9cba11a61"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["hnus@vts.edu"],"_version_":1825062397878992896,"timestamp":"2025-02-25T20:25:34.696Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-01-16T16:32:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-01-16T16:32:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"834f4f0e-78d1-4d8d-a379-3d44e348ef3c","accessControl_ssim":["9c567936-fb45-49de-b601-e840937f0ecb"],"depositor_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Developing a Generation-Z Youth Disciple-Making Strategy for New Zion Baptist Church, Covington, Louisiana"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-01-16T16:32:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-01-16T16:32:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["71eaf59c-8a35-41ae-9f38-9ee7868cd04e"],"hasLease_ssim":["2a0cdc6a-1d3f-4e12-afe1-1180dc307afb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DEdMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dr. David Odom"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"location_tesim":["Louisiana"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Ed.Min. I then leveraged the knowledge gained from examining each of these fields of research to develop a church training manual for ministry to juvenile offenders."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"_version_":1799764084526153728,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T14:39:43.003Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-05-02T20:10:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-03T17:06:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"08a1ecee-d97a-456c-875d-3daa957579d8","accessControl_ssim":["18ef79d8-6a86-420a-bc44-79ed091bdc9e"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["63f811ab-a01b-417d-8c45-cc97d4d32165"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["63f811ab-a01b-417d-8c45-cc97d4d32165"],"depositor_ssim":["marktwinters@gmail.com"],"depositor_tesim":["marktwinters@gmail.com"],"title_tesim":["Jo"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-05-02T20:10:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-03T17:06:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["31aa1c7a-35af-413d-a265-9c50f31e031a"],"hasLease_ssim":["ac138b3d-b71a-4b6f-8411-012c36cf2938"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Alternatively, the biblical concept of vocation teaches that people serve as God’s agents to lovingly sustain the world through their roles (vocations) in life—in family, at work, in the community and church. Teens need of what the teaching of vocation offers. A high calling is offered through the biblical concept of vocation. However, there are few, if any, materials or curricula available to teach the concept of vocation for today’s high school audience. The concern over a lack of materials or curricula on vocation prompted the focus of this project. If materials were created for a high school audience, and then taught, would the topic be seen as relevant and resonate with the audience? Further, would this material also be comprehended and understood? The challenge of this project was to create a curriculum that would be designed in such a way that the concept would be remembered and applied. This experiment in ministry helped the writer grow in the understanding of the topic of vocation and, through providing a written curriculum, introduced students to a new way of seeing their life in Christ and God’s ultimate purpose for them in being a channel of His love and care to others."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","roger.peters@ctsfw.edu"],"_version_":1791135432398864384,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:59.084Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-13T20:30:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:05:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"434207b9-f125-44dd-b745-2a15f871581b","accessControl_ssim":["e8cf9113-7bcc-4898-895c-3e22ab1811af"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Building sustainable faith experience for urban youth"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-13T20:30:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:05:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3c7c08dd-2eff-47a7-a10a-f3da7716aa90"],"hasLease_ssim":["17eed855-036a-4940-bec0-565781b013d8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Bethel Seminary (St. Paul, MN)"],"advisor_tesim":["Timothy Senapatiratne"],"year_tesim":["2015"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Crawford, Stephen James"],"publisher_tesim":["Bethel Seminary (St. Paul, MN)"],"subject_tesim":["Youth--Religious life","Church work with youth","City churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["None"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Bethel Seminary (St. Paul, MN)"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["fccbc3d7-874c-42e3-8a20-621b107c56c7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132554856759296,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:05:14.846Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":248,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
