The project enlists church members in intentional involvement with sermons before, during, and after worship, individually and in groups. Participants prepare for a sermon, focus their listening with questions during the sermon, respond to the sermon in an experiential rather than homiletically critical way in small groups meeting with the preacher, and continue consideration of the sermon in journal questions for several days afterward. The reductions include the salaries of ordained clergy.  At the same time there are trained, ordained ministers who, for varying reasons, work in secular vocations.  Some assume the dual responsibility of providing professional leadership to churches while continuing in their present occupation.  This study looks at this bi-vocationalism among American Baptist churches in New Jersey and examines whether there is adequate biblical, theological and historical validity to support such a form of ministry.  The primary method of research involves research questionnaires, interviews and observations. Other methods include case studies and a library survey. The study concludes that bi-vocationalism has roots in Paul's 'tent-making'. It is consistent with an incarnational theology based on God's involvement in the world through Jesus Christ.  It provides trained professionals for the small church. Church growth is a product of the cooperative endeavor of a pastor and laymen.  For this project the pastors' Church Study Committee and the laymen's local Church Growth Committee were organized.  Seminars were held and questionnaires were prepared to identify church growth factors and their effect in the local churches.  The pastors' committee evaluated the questionnaires. The results were shared with the Church Growth Committee in each local church. A study is made of the place of financial stewardship in the Old and New Testaments.  Theological study looks at stewardship in Reformed theology.  The study includes a look at how worship and financial stewardship are linked.  A survey was made of 32 Presbyterian churches, each with 2000 members or more.  Active laity and clergy attitudes and practices were uncovered.  Campaign practices were surveyed.
