A primary premise of the work is that the systemic nature of the dichotomy is expressed in most aspects of Christianity, decreasing the potential of individual Christians to effectively live the Christian life and do the work of ministry that Christ has left for his church. A historical analysis traces the origin of the dichotomy and how the dichotomy has been codified by church structures, constitutions, and traditions. The Pauline epistles are employed to illustrate the point that the whole church has been equipped by the Holy Spirit to know and to do the theology that is proclaimed in the scriptures. Peter Senge's idea of a Learning Organization is used as an applicable methodology for mending the dichotomy. Its more horizontal outline helps the church to sanction the laity as equal partners and fellow leaders in the ministry of the church and reduces the church's tendency to reproduce chronic multitudes of perpetual followers. A question the thesis poses is developed around the idea of whether the Christian church will allow a division that looks and oftentimes feels so much like the outlawed Jim Crow laws in this country to continue to thrive, or, whether the church will submit the horrific practice of the dichotomy to the oneness of the church inaugurated by the blood of Jesus Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131431343226880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:47:23.380Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:59:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:29:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"05e0bd77-4019-42df-a512-70b99fc316de","accessControl_ssim":["418fc794-d312-4927-9b6b-8644d08c7c23"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of an adventure in healing and wholeness program"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:59:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:17:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["db86a38e-4e05-42f7-8aba-fa3b5cf6b6cc"],"hasLease_ssim":["fd7b35d7-862f-4fe4-8c79-947962545002"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Sue Zabel"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Measuring the right criterion, parishioners' satisfaction, can influence the quality of ministry pastors provide. This qualitative case study describes how chaplains and congregations understand ministry and uses the business model conjointly with the biblical theology to measure parishioners' satisfaction. As a pro-active observer, the researcher coordinated two annual conferences and seventeen discussion groups to identify the elements of ministry in a military chapel setting which best defines and encourages quality ministry in three army chapels. Measuring parishioners' satisfaction provided a more meaningful assessment of the community's spiritual fitness. This study sought to gather information on successful and unsuccessful transitions by focusing on three participants in each transition: the predecessor, the successor, and the congregation. Twenty pastors from the Western New York Conference of the United Methodist Church were chosen to be interviewed based on meeting the following criteria: 1) full-time pastors appointed at some point in their vocation to succeed a pastor who had served the congregation for nine years or more; 2) for those currently serving in that position, a minimum tenure of two years was required; and 3) for those not currently serving in that position, the term of service needed to have ended within the past five years. Data analysis was based on the transcripts of those interviews. In regard to the three participants in pastoral transitions the major findings included: 1) the choices the predecessor made in relating to the congregation and supporting the new pastor were more important than whether he or she remained in the church and community; 2) a healthy process of grieving and letting go of the predecessor was critical if the congregation was to welcome and follow the new pastor; 3) the incoming pastor's ability to understand the congregation and exert appropriate leadership was essential in each transition. The increasing length of pastorates in the United Methodist Church requires attention to the dynamics of succession following long-term pastorates. This study concludes that more transitions can be successful with the provision of appropriate training that focuses on practical matters and issues of character."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134344002142208,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:33:41.108Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:39:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:39:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"84b2de14-b5d8-4b30-a73f-7c14b6fca627","accessControl_ssim":["72906035-320d-4406-b5c2-acea3690f03f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Congregational/clergy conflict and involuntary termination"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:39:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:02:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d08bb156-16a2-4469-8645-ad08e62e6e57"],"hasLease_ssim":["5572e39b-44a4-40d9-8e27-e65d0bc65604"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John D Sharick"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Leslie J Atkinson"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Clergy","Laity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The paper acknowledges the historical existence of conflict in the church, examines the role of conflict in social organizations, and points to the shift in conflict from doctrinal/structural issues to personal issues, i.e., the pastor's activities. A survey instrument was developed, sent to 91 persons, and 35 responded.
