With the assault on the outdated model for relationships of the dominant-superior 'partner' and a submissive-inferior 'non-person,' it is imperative to develop models and guidelines for doing ministry with straight, white, North American males.  The project discusses three retreat models and a mid-life counseling method with such males. That term refers to dialogue, mutuality, and joint stewardship of the Word between preacher and people as they gather around the Scriptures.  Evaluation of nine sermons, sessions discussing views of preaching, and sermon preparation seminars were the methods used; members of Fourth Lutheran Church, Springfield, Ohio, participated. The model presumes a basic course in preaching offered through the seminary.  Five students preached five times in their pastoral settings, and worked with a group of laity and pastors/supervisors to prepare and to critique their preaching.  The primary finding indicates that the method works well if done correctly. Students can learn preaching skills effectively through direct contact with parishioners and supervisors in a real preaching experience.  The lay people benefit also by learning about Scripture, preaching, and the coming Sunday celebration. In this project, four passages with textual variants were considered.  A complete textual discussion is followed by an exegesis.  A sermon was then developed which incorporated the textual material. The pastor met with fifteen parishioners during the season of Lent in order to prepare liturgies for the Second Sunday in Easter, Ascension Sunday, and Pentecost Sunday.  The study discusses what worked and what did not work and then proposes a new model.  What began as a study of lay participation in liturgy planning, ended up with some useful insights into the role of the pastor in the congregation.  A number of issues relating to pastoral function and identity as well as the priesthood of believers are raised in the final chapter. The paper uses the Wesleyan quadrilateral and an analysis of the local church setting as a basis for establishing role priorities.  The paper includes ten attributes which the writer considers essential for effective ministry.  Senior ministers should take into account their strengths and weaknesses regarding these attributes in order to establish priorities in a realistic and practical manner. Findings include information on who these people are, how they viewed their pastoral work while in it, the pressures and processes of leaving it, and how they experience life with the pastorate in their past and a new career before them.  The survey shows that, according to overall mean and rank, the primary stress in ministry and, according to higher values only, the major reason for the respondents leaving the pastorate is church conflict. The ex-pastor experienced role conflict and, while his exodus was multi-determined, he sought for consistency between his individual values and his occupation.
