Method: from the fields of suicidology, death and dying, theology, and pastoral care, the author presents characteristics of adolescent suicidal behaviour, explores despair and hope, applies these understandings to the process of healing, and compares the research to informed responses from United Church of Christ pastors. Such preaching involves a measure of self-disclosure, providing identification between preacher and hearer. The author did qualitative research with men and women in recovery who were participating in Serenity Retreats, and who affirmed the need for a preacher's self-disclosure and awareness of recovery motifs. He also did similar research within a parish setting, with like results. It begins with a study of the lives of Moses and Paul, and then reviews select, current leadership literature. This project interviewed 14 Assemblies of God leaders, and found that a pre-adolescent experience of faith in Christ and a stable home life were foundational in their lives. At the very end of the thesis there are three sermons by the author preached from the fall of 2003 and to March 2004. ABE seeks to influence all levels of the ABCUSA through the renewal of churches in the denomination. The thesis asks how pastors that serve churches affiliated with ABE reflect the values of the renewal movement.  This thesis tells of the beginnings of ABE and its role as an evangelical renewal group in the ABCUSA.  It continues with the theological and biblical grounds for renewal and the need for renewal among American Baptists today.  The thesis looks at the need for renewal in mainline denominations of America and other evangelical renewal groups that seek to influence their denominations.  This thesis includes field research that asked pastors how they reflected the values of the renewal movement. Interviews were also conducted to inquire about renewal themes in the local church and in the ABC.  Recommendations are made to support ABE's efforts to work with the pastors of affiliate churches.  The future of the ABC will be determined by its ability to effectively respond to the workings of God's Spirit. Epistles of Paul","Equality","Church--Unity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work focuses upon some intentional, unintentional, and coincidental influences a laity/clergy dichotomy has had and continues to have upon the ministry of the Christian church. A primary premise of the work is that the systemic nature of the dichotomy is expressed in most aspects of Christianity, decreasing the potential of individual Christians to effectively live the Christian life and do the work of ministry that Christ has left for his church. A historical analysis traces the origin of the dichotomy and how the dichotomy has been codified by church structures, constitutions, and traditions. The Pauline epistles are employed to illustrate the point that the whole church has been equipped by the Holy Spirit to know and to do the theology that is proclaimed in the scriptures. Peter Senge's idea of a Learning Organization is used as an applicable methodology for mending the dichotomy. Its more horizontal outline helps the church to sanction the laity as equal partners and fellow leaders in the ministry of the church and reduces the church's tendency to reproduce chronic multitudes of perpetual followers. Spirituality is here defined as one's personal relationship to God. Jesus makes this very clear in his teachings in the New Testament. In chapters 5, 6, and 7 in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shows how to live a personal spiritual life that affects the individual and the world. Christian leaders focus too often on programs and statements at the general level while trying to improve the ministry of the church, but goal setting and programs alone do not improve ministry if they do not reach individuals and set their hearts afire for the ministry they are called to do. The early church in the book of Acts attests to the importance of one's spirituality (Acts 2:42). The early church fathers and church reformers were deeply aware that if spirituality is to be found within the church it needs first to be found in the hearts of individuals who are responsible for ministry (Wesley, 'Wesley's Use' 63). Wesley particularly emphasized the importance of spirituality in the life of lay ministers. United Methodist ministry today and leadership of the local church are based on laity and clergy cooperation. United Methodist annual conferences and districts provide continuing education for clergy. One of the most important goals for district superintendents is to take care of the spiritual formation training for their pastors. Little spiritual training, however, is offered for local lay leaders, especially for those serving in small membership churches. This dissertation defends the view that spiritual formation instruction for lay leaders, based on a Wesleyan model, makes a difference. Parish ministers leave pastorates (and even the ministry) due to burnout, its symptoms, and other factors. High pastoral turnover rates are counterproductive to local church effectiveness. This qualitative study used a researcher-designed, semi-structured interview to gather data from thirty United States Nazarene pastors to comment on a presumed positive connection between sabbaticals, reduced burnout symptoms, and increased tenure The study finds that Nazarene pastor sabbaticals have a positive reactive and preventative impact on ministry tenure and the pastor's ability to manage burnout symptoms. Sabbaticals typically lengthen local parish tenure but occasionally help pastors prepare spiritually for a new ministry assignment.
