This author used surveys and individual interviews with A. M. E. pastors to assess the reassignment process.  The findings indicated that the absence of communication before reassignment had the emotional effect associated with loss, diminishing Itinerant Elder authority in ministry and their role as a partner in the vision for the church. Suggestions are made for more effective cross-racial appointments. The method used in the survey of local congregations and the educational forums for the pastors and laity on the conference level. Even though the general experience of cross-racial appointments is positive, it is still being tolerated rather than being fully accepted.
