This project discovered and analyzed the potential for pastoral longevity in the Evangelical Free Church of America.  Advantages and disadvantages of both short-term and long-term pastorates were given.  The case was made biblically and practically for long-term pastorates.  EFCA pastors who had been in their churches ten years or longer were surveyed.  Longevity factors were then identified, corroborated, and analyzed.  Demographic factors concerning both pastors and their churches were included. Research of published material reviewed statistical reports, dissertations, published works, and internet sources. These were scrutinized in conjunction with surveys and subsequent interviews with ministers in transition and denominational officials.  Prevention and intervention strategies were evaluated, resulting in recommendations to bring healing to and reintegration of pastors into career ministry.  Emphasis is placed on a mentor/friend relationship to guide both minister and family through the transition. In this study the authors surveyed pastors who are looking to hire associate staff, seeking to ascertain their level of understanding and preparedness for the task at hand.  The research revealed that most churches and their pastors have not agreed on a process for hiring associate pastors.  The author concludes that it is the senior pastor who should lead the search for kindred spirit team members. A seminar was facilitated to develop each participant's cognitive, affective, and behavioral readiness for ministry.  The goals of this project were to research resources relatd to preparing for God's call, to develop teaching materials to assist students in developing a vision to carry out God's call, and to equip students to carry out their call to Christian ministry.  A paired-sample T-Test was calculated to compare the mean pretest score to the mean post-test score. Ministries that could last several years end up lasting just a few years due to unmet expectations and the inability to resolve conflict.  In this work, the author contends that long-term ministry is valuable.  Ministries lasting ten years or more are normally based on mutual trust between pastor and congregation.  The depth of relationship brings trust and stability to a church unknown in shorter pastorates. The literature supports this in both religious and secular fields.  Those entering ministry need to be well prepared for the rigors of relationship building, making themselves vulnerable and open, while still maintaining a level of trust and professionalism. The Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches is comprised of over 500 churches and is benefiting greatly from the dedicated service of pastors who are daring to pay the price of long-term service.  Their insights were a primary source of research in determining what relational factors are paramount in the building of a marathon ministry.  Consulted also were the executive and regional ministers who from their perspectives add much as they consult with search committees, pastors, and congregations in crisis.  They serve on the front lines of ministry and understand well the pressures that go along with building a significant relational ministry.  Several theological themes were discussed under the heading of the struggle between the sin-led life and the Spirit-led life.  Such subjects as submission, partnership, and shepherding were viewed through these lenses. This aided greatly in discerning the primary issues facing churches and pastors as they pursue significant ministry together. The author examines the New Testament terms 'elder,' 'overseer,' and 'pastor,' asking how associate pastors fit into the mix.  He then examines Scriptural examples of men who held positions akin to 'associate' status, who were later elevated to senior leadership ranks -- Joshua, Elisha, the disciples, and Timothy. Field research consisted of interviewing six senior pastors who formerly were associate pastors.  From these interviews the author compiled a list of activities to prepare himself for the transition from an associate to a senior pastorate, and then reported on the fulfillment of the activities.
