Using the perspective of the ministry studies of the United Methodist Church, the author analyzes pertinent data from scripture, church history and ecumenical agreements as well as social factors of time periods when the various forms of the diaconate (deacon, monastic orders, deaconess, diaconal minister) were strong, and concludes that the office of deacon is important as a representative ministry and embodiment of Christ's call to serve. Goals included: to determine attitudes of parishioners towards pastoral visitation; to analyze the pastor's role in visitation; and to evaluate referrals made after visits.  The biblical, theological, and historical foundations of pastoral visitation were examined. The program of visitation was described and results analyzed. A multiple church staff is called to model what it means to be Christ's body by exibiting unity, equality, and interdependence.  The challenge is that multiple staff relationships are problematic in many churches.  This study maintains that a multiple staff can fulfill this calling by becoming a shared-responsibility team. Nine United Methodist congregations ranging from 500 to 999 members were studied. Since very few helpful models or institutions are likely to be available, the church, through the local congregation, must be able to offer a viable ministry of reconciliation.  This project focuses first on an analysis of the circumstances which presently are contributing to the pain and separation. Secondly, it attempts to build a practical theology where belief and practice are mutually independent. This project tests the presence of nine ministry models or role-sets in the Conference through a random survey of senior pastors, laity, Bethel Seminary faculty, national and district leaders.
