First, a biblical examination of the legitimacy of the office is undertaken. If, in fact, one is going to take the title of 'pastor,' what does that mean? A brief study regarding the primary responsibility of the 'pastor' as a teacher of God's Word is examined. The first chapter closes with a theological study of the significance of teaching in an expository manner. The exact definition of expository preaching is then evaluated, especially as set against what is commonly referred to as 'topical preaching.' The way in which expository preaching fits into the ministry of a youth pastor committed to God's design for ministry is then discussed. A five-chapter manual follows for training youth pastors in expository preaching. The first chapter revisits the job definition of a youth pastor -- according to God. The second chapter seeks to clearly lay out expository teaching/preaching as the only legitimate manner of preaching -- for it has at its heart the understanding, communication, and application of the authorial intent of the passage. Chapter 3 focuses on seven specific principles of hermeneutics. It is designed to assist youth pastors as they seek to determine a biblical author's intent through exegesis. Chapter 4 discusses how to convey that intent into an adolescent's world, using the Ladder of Abstraction. Chapter 5 addresses twelve guidelines for writing a message with the youth culture in mind. Finally, the Appendix models the expository method with six messages geared to youth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132991341199360,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:12:11.110Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:21:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:51:29Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"94186e96-b33d-49e8-bd35-e61b88b4e3e1","accessControl_ssim":["b32b9f18-5d83-479d-ac54-de277567237e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["By what authority? essential elements of ordination in the Bible and history with application for the contemporary church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:21:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:27:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["289ebfde-5cd0-4979-854e-5d1758797948"],"hasLease_ssim":["53db23a4-8581-46ed-ba9d-d23cae47bcdc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kenneth L Swetland"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paul Steven Paulus"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Office","Ordination--Biblical teaching","Ordination--History of doctrines"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["A pattern of six essential elements in the doctrine and practice of ordination is discernible in the Bible and historical tradition. However, there is the possibility that, over time, an established church may become more influenced by other primary factors other than the gospel. Consequently, these churches will find themselves needing to rediscover the 'main thing' of the gospel as its primary, driving influence. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the visionary process of developing a distinctively gospel-driven ministry in the established local church, with a focus on my present call to Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, Mississippi. The following research questions guided this study: 1. What role will leadership play in the development of a gospel-driven ministry. 2. What role will theology play in the development of a gospel-driven ministry. 3. It provides biblical theological reflection, guidelines, and ideas for the use of visual display art. The following research questions guide this study: 1. what led to the present or past use of visual display art? 2. what has been the result of using display art in congregational life and ministry? 3. what, if any, efforts are being made to change the role of visual display art in congregational life and ministry? This research is a qualitative examination of visual display art and its role in the past, present, and plans for the future of Reformed and Presbyterian congregations. This study uses information gathered from two focus groups and seventeen interviews to gain insight into congregations from seven different denominations, all with roots in the Reformed and Presbyterian tradition. Among the lesson learned from this study and research, the following insights form the central findings: 1. Biblical and theological reflection does not support a complete separation from involvement in or use of visual arts in the individual, family, or corporate lives of Christians. 2. The presence of visual display art in the buildings and programs of churches with a Reformed and Presbyterian heritage currently has limited scope; moreover, there is little knowledge among most members as to how these visual pieces came into use. 3. The evaluation of the use of visuals in the life of a particular congregation is informal and sketchy at best. 3. A few churches and strategizing and structuring for increased inclusion of visual art through creative committees."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131563887427584,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:49:29.784Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:38:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:03:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ed7a0e68-0146-4b50-afec-93766deeb01c","accessControl_ssim":["cc414e00-290a-4cdc-9ba6-be1c465b5e6f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Church administration for growth past 1,000"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:38:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:54:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["eeafcbb7-5df1-4df2-ab2c-6bb6fa4a8def"],"hasLease_ssim":["5436bab7-4664-4832-a10a-1c50d997a82f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["David L Larsen"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert O Page"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School of Trinity International University"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Office","Church management"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["Church administration for growth past one thousand"],"abstract_tesim":["When senior pastors are shepherding a church approaching 1,000 people in size, the tension mounts in handling the workload. In this climate, how does a military chaplain do expository doctrinal preaching? This writer will attempt to show that doctrinal preaching is best done in an expository manner through diligent study, prayer, and a reliance on the Holy Spirit. Relevance is accomplished when the particulars of a given congregation are addressed. Chapter one addresses the problem of preaching that is mostly eisegetical and not exegetical. Chapter two establishes the biblical, sociological, and theological basis for doctrinal preaching with a contemporary congregation in mind. Chapter three reveals the methodology to address the stated problem, that of a preaching series on Bible doctrine. The stated primary goal is transformation, seeking the salvation of sinners and sanctification of saints. Progress of the project is also charted. Chapter four concludes with an evaluation gleaned from 24 surveys that were completed at the conclusion of the 14-week preaching series. The conclusion wraps up the entire project, encouraging fellow chaplains with preaching responsibilities toward expository doctrinal preaching."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717159544291328,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:13:51.853Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:17:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:57:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"acde1027-03c4-4461-859d-f698638cb479","accessControl_ssim":["9921cea6-1907-4282-8072-c3f7f9796ab5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'For you both': models for ministry for clergy couples in the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:16:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:07:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["469eee28-9deb-4187-80ea-5c83ee5e5e80"],"hasLease_ssim":["6420a490-b95f-4496-923b-152b32d2f647"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lewis A Parks"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The foundation of understanding this question is rooted in his calling to lead the covenant community. The minister is called by God not only to preach but also to serve as a leader of worship. Many ministers surrender their role as worship leader to others and view their responsibility in worship to be limited to 'bringing the message'. It is vital that every Presbyterian minister re-examine his role as the primary leader in worship as it is an important part of his calling. The minister needs to recognize that God has set him apart for this service: to lead the worshipping community in doxological worship thus preparing the congregation to receive to hear the preached Word, and to proclaim God's blessing to His people."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128562659491840,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:01:47.589Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:06:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:28:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"295993bd-7460-4a5b-a290-ef708317ed66","accessControl_ssim":["bdcf75cc-475e-4967-81fa-a7bc23b2199c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Project 'gifts and ministries' and its application in pastoral ministry in the Sixth Conference of the Methodist Church in Brazil"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:06:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:20:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0854a953-3b2d-4db8-9aec-cd03f61fbfda"],"hasLease_ssim":["dbd35e17-950d-4917-952f-97d6f9dc5aef"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Burrell D Dinkins"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["Brazil"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paulo Cesar Da Silva"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Clergy--Office","Methodist Church","Pastoral theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The intention of this project was to analyze the application of the Project 'Gifts and Ministries' (GM) in the Brazilian church. Considering the dimension of Brazil and its peculiarities, the focus was on the Sixth Conference. This conference was chosen because it is composed of several different cultures, history, geography, and leadership. My intention was to evaluate the application of the GM project in the church by interviewing ten pastors and ten lay leaders in the Six Conference. The criteria for their selection included the following: (1) They are working in important churches in the Conference; (2) They are already applying the GM; (3) They are experienced in pastoral ministry and leadership; and (4) They were pastors and lay leaders in the churches of the conference before the GM was approved by the General Conference in Brazil. My intention was to identify and understand difficulties, tensions, and probably ways for working with the gifts and ministries paradigm of the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134015774785536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:28:28.086Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":112,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
