The project was carried out in the setting of a general hospital based alcoholic rehabilitation program.  A group, led by a hospital chaplain, was set up to help patients work steps three, four, and five which are the spiritual core steps of Alcoholics Anonymous' twelve steps. The majority of the pastors interviewed visit in hospitals and homes where there is illness or crisis, but not routinely all parishioners.  Parishioners want this pastor to visit them regularly, but by appointment.  They want the visit to be social. Physiological and theological aspects of the processes of healing and wholeness were discussed. In addition nurses were polled concerning their opinions about the pastor's role in health care.  The surveys indicated that visiting, worship (prayer and sacraments) and counseling were the most important roles of the pastor in relation to a health crisis.  In a post test survey these activities were seen by the laity as a significant part of a person's treatment towards healing. What began as a study of lay participation in liturgy planning, ended up with some useful insights into the role of the pastor in the congregation.  A number of issues relating to pastoral function and identity as well as the priesthood of believers are raised in the final chapter. The paper uses the Wesleyan quadrilateral and an analysis of the local church setting as a basis for establishing role priorities.  The paper includes ten attributes which the writer considers essential for effective ministry.  Senior ministers should take into account their strengths and weaknesses regarding these attributes in order to establish priorities in a realistic and practical manner. This thesis/project is a descriptive study of the premarital counseling practices of a sample of 20 pastors in the Presbytery of Genesee Valley, New York, who were interviewed to ascertain their practices concerning inclusion of discussion of five areas of marital satisfaction which appear to be important for the content of premarital counseling: background information, communications, money, religion, and sexuality.  There is a wide divergence in the premarital counseling practices of pastors.  Some do an excellent job, but the majority of the sample appear to be struggling or frustrated in their practice of premarital counseling.
