The denomination has a very effective search system, but with fewer churches available, simple logic suggests that finding a new church is potentially difficult. The catalyst for this research was the author's spiritual and emotional struggles that were prominent during the search process. In an effort to care for pastors and their families in the midst of this wilderness like journey, nine pastors were interviewed in order to paint a proper picture of the PC(USA) search experience. The researcher investigated how other Protestant denominations perform this task, what the Bible says about the subject, and ways the LSLS can be improved. A qualitative approach was taken that used case study and grounded theory methods. The case study approach was followed through interviews and site visits. Respondents to a written questionnaire participated in the placement process at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia between 1991 and 1994.  Results indicate that most of the women experienced pain or discriminatory practices during their search for permanent placement. Parameters placed on the search process negatively affected the candidate's ability to find placement, and also their perception of the process. The paper surveys and analyzes current practices of the 36 regions and makes recommendations to enhance the role of congregations in the process. This descriptive study explored the question with a large scale survey mailed to all members of the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.  The design of the survey questionnaire included both qualitative and quantitative items in a mixed methodology.  The data yield was rich, giving a detailed picture of the ways in which different groups of pastors make the decision to move.
