The project focuses on men, but in the light of the entry of women into ministry. This project presents a process to help ordained clergy deal with their grief in order to strengthen their ministry.  The author's personal grief journey is shared with the purpose of discerning its effect on the person and profession of an ordained clergyperson.  The project's methodology involves colleagues in group therapy, responses to questionnaires, and resources and bibliographical data to find ways of support for caregivers and their grief journeys. A one-year timeframe was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the model which encourages clergy to find a point of balance in ministry, specifically in light of theology of self-care. In this dissertation two pastors of visibly growing churches in the United States were selected as subjects for evaluating the hypothesis.  It is also part of a larger project designed to develop tools to help pastors be more equipped for leadership in the local church. The hypothesis reads: an effective Christian leader maximizes his strengths, minimizes his limitations and consistently grows in Christlike character while influencing others to develop and accomplish a common vision. In this dissertation two pastors of visibly growing churches were selected as subjects for evaluating the Project Cathedral hypothesis.  Through the use of aquestionnaire, an evaluation tool, on-site observations and church documentation, data were collected, analyzed and interpreted for each case study.  Based upon the evidence presented, both subjects in these case studies validate the Project Cathedral hypothesis for effective Christian leaders. The long-range goal of Project Cathedral is to develop tools to help pastors be more equipped in analyzing their gifts, character development and vision, evaluating their ministry skills and assessing action steps needed for improvement of leadership. The results established certain commonalities in work-related personality characteristics among the research group, which aided in producing a 'pastor suitability profile' of personality characteristics judged significant for a job-fit with the pastoral ministry. This thesis was explored using two methods of data collection: a series of case consultation meetings involving two separate clergy groups; and a survey of 228 Michigan clergy. The program was sponsored by the Northern Wisconsin District of the former American Lutheran Church.  The thesis was a response to two questions: who ministers to our clergy? where does the caregiver go to receive care?  The Mentor Project had four design facets: a mentor who was available to clergy; spiritual retreats; colleague groups; and fellowship groups.  The key to this project was the provision of mentors.  The pilot Mentor Project was a proven program which met the self-care needs of clergy participants.
