It designed and tested a thirty-six hour workshop that helped eleven participants learn: 1) ways of identifying burnout; 2) what effects burnout can have on one's spiritual and physical conditions; and 3) ways clergy can equip themselves to cope with burnout and retain their effectiveness as ministers.  The project developed three instruments: a Self-Evaluation Survey on Burnout; a Fatigue Factor Survey; and a Participant's Evaluation Form.  This process was successful in raising participants' consciousness about burnout. The study was limited to those who had spent a minimum of five years in the parish after becoming ordained.  An attempt was made to look at roles, family dynamics, and relationships with the system of the denomination.  All subjects were mailed questionnaires, and a portion of the subjects were interviewed. It explores pastors' experiences with and their denial of loneliness.  The study explores both the necessity and the possibility of embracing loneliness within pastoral ministry.  The disclosive sample of five married, parish-based Lutheran clergy, basically through interviews and a nine-month long group seminar, expresses and engages experiences of loneliness in pastoral ministry.  It is discovered that loneliness is a real experience in pastoral ministry, often experienced and perceived in negative terms. Information was obtained by open-ended interviews with Protestant Episcopal, United Methodist, and United Presbyterian clergymen (five from each denomination). Undergirding the conceptual framework of the study are developmental psychological findings primarily of Erikson, Levinson, Gould, Sheehy, Howe, and Sherrill. The first was an analysis of ordinary and biblical usage of the word 'reward.'  the second was a questionnaire survey of all parish ministers in Baltimore Annual Conference.  The third was a series of three dialogue groups held among parish ministers in Baltimore Annual Conference. Suffering represents various subjective emotions reflecting absent validation for the pastors. Clergy question their meaningfulness as well as confront the violation of deeply-held expectations regarding their vocation and results of their labors. Clergy seek to improve their circumstances by turning to spiritual, social, emotional, and/or intellectual resources. Greater healing may result, though, as clergy become 'co-creators' of meaning with God. Clergy may eventually integrate the suffering for an enriched faith perspective and enhanced gifts for spiritual leadership. A total of 334 pastors from the International Pentecostal Holiness Church were mailed a survey containing the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, the Maslach Burnout-Human Services Indicator and a 'Support System Inventory'.  A total of 142 pastors returned the data.  The findings support the hypothesis.
