The method used in this study was grounded theory. The results show that chaplains go through a transformation and become new people. The changes that occur are categorized by five marks. These marks include: increased humility, improved pastoral identity, recognizing their finiteness, valuing their contributions, and finding strengths in weakness. The research described the inherent hazards of working within this ministry. A quantitative survey was sent to every officer serving in the Southern Territory to understand their felt needs. The research showed that children, emotional problems, and administrative expectations were at the top felt needs. The results also demonstrated that officers were hesitant to reach out to the administration because of fear of negative consequences. The most recent research also demonstrates that burnout is a factor faced by those in the pastorate.  There are specific causes of pastoral burnout and there are specific ways to prevent burnout and be restored from burnout.  The Scriptures demonstrate that the nature of ministry places the pastor at a high risk for pastoral burnout.  The burnout of the prophet Elijah in 1 Kings 19 is the framework for a ministry of preventing pastoral burnout. It includes an exegetical analysis and comparison of a first and second generation leader in Scripture.  The three primary areas of research are challenges in leadership development, ministry crisis and burnout, and pre-conversion adverse experiences. Systems theory provides the necessary tools to navigate the anxious swells of the ministry environment. A theological review in the Book of genesis revealed family of origin dynamics that influenced the lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.  A literature review resulted in data that showed pastoral leadership to be uniquely stressful and family of origin dynamics to be life shaping. This study explored intentional clergy self-care based on the researcher's PMS model of prayer, meditation and support. Using qualitative research, a face-to-face six-week study with a clergy peer group and a secondary study using an online questionnaire were conducted.  The results showed that pastors experience greater stress in ministry than those in other ministry positions.
