If one of these relationships is damaged or left untended, it can cause difficulties in a pastor's spiritual life. After an initial interview six pastors engaged in six spiritual direction sessions and then a final interview. Working with a more experienced disciple, the spiritual disciplines of contemplative prayer, Lectio Divina, and solitude and silence form the project's focus. A qualitative study was carried out to explore the factors which encourage ministers to take sabbatical leave. This study suggests that the denomination needs to work at explaining the need for and benefits of sabbatical leave and to be more proactive in encouraging ministers. The study was conducted by exploring several popular resources on pastoral theology and examining their emphasis on (or lack of) union with Christ. Additionally, qualitative research was conducted with twelve pastors who serve in the Presbyterian Church in America. There appears to be a catalytic relationship between spiritual conversations and the spiritual health of church leaders. Church leaders find a safe place for discerning God's healing initiative through spiritual direction. To ascertain the impact of spiritual direction upon the church leader's spiritual formation, sixteen pastors and program staff received monthly spiritual direction for twelve months. Ninety-four percent reported aspects of spiritual growth.
