The new generation of retirees from the baby boomer generation will define aging and retirement in a new way. The purpose of this project was to conduct an investigative study to help the Free Church strategize. This project focused on transition models and two case studies that illustrate positive retirement strategies. The report asked, 'How well can we prepare for transition, retirement, or change so that it is a 'non-emergency'? What does good leadership look like in times of transition?' Over a six week period the author explored the retirement experiences of nine retired clergy. The design of the sessions included the components of Groome's shared Christian praxis. A continuous assessment method was used to track the spiritual needs of clergy identified in the sessions. The author concluded that retired clergy need the support of the church during the developmental transition into retirement. In a survey using a Likert scale questionnaire plus a fill-in section, 92 chaplains who retired from the Navy from 1980-1985 were questioned concerning their attitude toward denominational assistance at time of retirement, their experiences in making the transition and their feelings about having served in the military. Feelings, activities, and reasons for retirement were considered and included: anticipation of freedom from the schedule of meetings and other time-intensive demands; expectations to continue their calling as ministers in some way; and satisfaction in retirement related to collegiality if practiced in active ministry.  The author suggests that all levels of church governing bodies reconsider their policies and programs for the retirement of ministers. This project uses the focused interview to identify transitional difficulties and the availability of assistance in these categories: theological, personal, economic, familial and relocation.  It draws conclusions, with correlative implications, from these interviews.  Southern Baptist ministers, generally, are not adversely affected by ministry in the military.  They usually return successfully to ministry within their denomination.  Personal contacts with civilian denominational counterparts is a definite enhancement to this
