The content explores four spiritual disciplines--silence, solitude, prayer and contemplation.  Each discipline is examined by integrating biblical insights with themes synthesized from writers representing Evangelical, Roman Catholic, and Jewish traditions. The selected pastors were asked to fill out a five-page survey about their own personal and professional development practices.  The author reviewed the biblical/theological data regarding the New Testament role of pastor/teacher. The author then conducted a brief survey of the personal and professional practices of past Christian leaders. Closer to home the priority of preaching slides in our churches amidst a culture sedated by information overload and anti-intellectualism. Moreover, missiologists report that where the church is exploding in African, Latin American and Asian continents, new converts are regularly enfolded into churches that are led by inadequately trained bi-vocational pastors. Significant kingdom gains are frequently undermined by weak theology in the pulpit and spurious teaching. The result is a weakened church. Good preaching is critical to the health and wellbeing of our churches. More specifically, it is expository preaching that best equips and sustains healthy, reproducing congregations. This project is my attempt to address this reality. The participants were the 2000 class of probationary members of the Florida Conference UMC. The results indicate the need for training in administrative and relationship skills. The author examines the New Testament terms 'elder,' 'overseer,' and 'pastor,' asking how associate pastors fit into the mix.  He then examines Scriptural examples of men who held positions akin to 'associate' status, who were later elevated to senior leadership ranks -- Joshua, Elisha, the disciples, and Timothy. Field research consisted of interviewing six senior pastors who formerly were associate pastors.  From these interviews the author compiled a list of activities to prepare himself for the transition from an associate to a senior pastorate, and then reported on the fulfillment of the activities. The subjects were the pastors of churches that were visited and where conferences were attended as part of the 2001-2002 Beeson Pastor Program of Asbury Theological Seminary. The findings of this research suggest that mentoring makes an important contribution to the development of pastors.
