The program will be for nine weeks, meeting two hours per week, and will be taught by the writer of this paper, who is also the project leader. The project leader will combine the mechanics of biblical preaching with historical and cultural experiences of preaching in the African-American church. This project will produce a handbook for biblical preaching in the African-American church. The handbook will include all nine lessons, handouts, exercises, and an annotated bibliography. The handbook could be used to train associate ministers in their local church, a retreat, or in self-help. For this project, the handbook will be used to train associate preachers in the project leader's church during a nine-week program. The majority of Seventh-day Adventist churches in Texas are in a district consisting of two or three churches that share one pastor. The district pastor often can not be in every church each week, creating a need for lay leaders to preach. This D.Min. project is divided into two sections. The first three weeks of this project will equip the local pastor to become a mentor to lay leaders in order to help them develop skills in Bible-based preaching. During the next six weeks, each pastor will lead in a workshop that is designed to assist one or both lay leaders in their development and delivery of a Bible-based, Christ-centered sermon. This project begins with a survey of biblical and professional literature regarding the subject of vocational ministry mentoring.  Special emphasis has been placed upon literature that addresses the cultural issues that one may face while ministering in the North American Chinese church context.  The centerpiece of this project revolves around two case studies of Chinese churches that are presently sponsoring and hosting vocational ministry internships. Once case study was conducted at the West Houston (Houston, Tex) Chinese Church and the second involving two churches with a cooperative internship program--the Chinese Bible Church of Maryland (Rockville, Md), and the Chinese Christian Church of Greater Washington, DC (Silver Spring, Md). The goal is for professional clergy to identify, mentor and elevate women and men through a clergy apprenticeship and into transformational leadership. A panel of experienced clergy evaluated the model. The results indicated that the Mentoring Model was most successful as a catalyst for structuring the process. The results also indicate the presence of a prevailing impact on the Kingdom of God. The hypothesis was that through the design of a new, required course, focused on serving as a 'rite of passage' into seminary, new students could have a more hospitable experience of making the transition into the seminary community. The model used was an education model focused on hospitality as a theological practice. The project sessions began with an introductory meeting to discuss what the classes would entail.  The deacons then participated in six training sessions lasting one and one-half hours each.  An eighth and final session was held to review and answer any questions that had arisen during the implementation of the project.  The training materials for these sessions were developed to meet the specific needs of life crisis events in the Centreville community. This pilot program seminar consisted of meeting surveyed needs of ministers through reading research, creating personal philosophies, and evaluation their personal programs. The results indicated that ministers wanted to be equipped to do ministry; therefore, validating this certification program. The certification program seminars will include pre-seminar assignments, as well as a post-seminar evaluation. A small group was offered an opportunity to participate in 1) concentrated training for basic youth ministry, 2) observation in churches with comprehensive, healthy youth ministries and 3) personal mentoring time dealing with ministry issues.  Predominatly Hispanic conference leaders from around the state led the training sessions, thus providing teaching as well as contacts and role models for them. Observations increased application ideas.  Mentoring allowed personal growth based upon their personal needs. This project examines the historical context, philosophical underpinnings and the practice of solution-focused therapy.  Additionally, it reflects upon this method philosophically and theologically.  In turn, it demonstrates the value of using this brief method of therapy in pastoral conversations.
