Dealing with the needs of commuter households, determining ways to enable them to participate meaningfully in the life and ministry of the church, and facilitating the transformation of a commuter church into an outward focused, community-anchored church are adaptive problems. Each church implemented strengths training after participating in a Gallup Member Engagement Survey (ME25). Mixed methods grounded theory research was used to compare the statistical data from each survey result to the qualitative data obtained from interviews of church members. These churches may, however, be incorrectly applying general societal concerns about commitment to Christians who are seeking commitment. A substantial group of people in the current study desired to become church members, but, because of church leadership de-emphasis of formal membership, had limited avenues to express this element of their faith. Designed to assist church leaders and parishioners in finding new understanding and meaning in formal church membership, the study offers a biblical and theological guide for those struggling with the concept of church membership, as well as a review of significant literature relating to the subject. Two local churches were selected for a three hour seminar on church membership. Within the context of the congregation this writer serves, he sought to structure a conversation among young adults currently active within the church and those without through surveys and interviews. In May 2010, the congregation took the Gallup ME25 survey. Case studies were conducted on churches that had made similar efforts. A resurvey in November 2011 occurred following efforts to focus on people's strengths. Meaningful increases were found on multiple items with many increased responses. Overall engagement of the congregation increased, while not-engaged and actively disengaged percentages decreased. The project is a study of congregational approaches and strategies for ministry to inactives. The research portion of the project included a survey of large rural congregations regarding their approach to inactive members. A follow-up interview was conducted with pastors of selected congregations that participated in the survey. This research, along with the literature review, informed the recommendations for a comprehensive approach for Christian caregiving of inactives in a large, rural congregation.
