The design of learning experiences begins with an interview to elicit expectations and a period of guided individual learning with a sponsor.  Then, group meetings explore faith and Christian living.  Daily Bible readings expand each meeting theme during the week.  Participants expressed six types of expectations which motivated their learnings, and their growth is correlated to Fowler's faith development theory. The author sets forth underlying theological assumptions and looks at the catechumenate in its present form by journeying with one group of catechumens and sponsors from the precatechumenate in January 1982 to the celebration of Confirmation on Easter Sunday, April 1983.  Examined closely are the various stages of the RCIA: precatechumenate, catechumenate, special preparation (Lent) and mystagogy. Monthly teaching sessions, catechumen group meetings, sponsor catechumen sessions, service projects, liturgical rites, and Christian Living Days are treated.  The role and ministry of catechumens, sponsors, catechists, liturgical ministers, and catechumenate team are considered in turn.
