Some of their traits can be positive such as quick communication, building on tradition, and mutual recognition. This project studied instances where negative expressions of single cell congregations were evident such as indirect communication, the making of scapegoats, and failing to observe boundaries. Members of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest will be surveyed through an online questionnaire and focus groups regarding their own values and practices in philanthropy and where they believe their local church should be involved in mission. The author of this paper argues that preaching can be a catalyst for moving a congregation from fear to joy. Preachers have the opportunity to proclaim the Word of God so that through the power of the Holy Spirit transformation occurs and faith is deepened. This study determined through surveys, interviews, and research behaviors these pastors believed effective for church growth and the application of these behaviors in the church. The most important discovery that the author made was the state of disconnect among many pastors between what they believed about church growth and what was practiced in the local church. This state of disconnect may be a factor in church decline.
