Is it possible to live creatively within this tension? This is the question this project explores. The first chapter looks at this tension as it is experienced in a particular church by one pastor. Hopefully the reader will be able to identify with this experience in his or her own ministry setting. Next the project looks at three contemporary models of social ministry in a pastoral context. Chapter two offers the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Rev. Dr. Paul Sherry, President of the United Church of Christ, and Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker, as these models. The third chapter offers a theological foundation to support ministry that balances the pastoral and social. Juergen Moltman is the primary reference for this theological exploration. The final chapter includes a variety of ways the creative tension of social and pastoral ministry can be lived out in the local church. The project concludes that social ministry can creatively stimulate pastoral ministry. Each unit contains a group discussion guide.The first three study units present a biblical perspective on diversity of opinion in the church. Unit one is an investigation of diversity in the New Testament church designed to demonstrate that a romanticized conception of the early years of the Christian era as a time of uncomplicated unity and undisturbed unanimity of opinion is inconsistent with the testimony of the biblical material. Unit two is an examination of New Testament unity 'in Christ.'  Unit three is a presentation of the strategies, attitudes, and skills necessary to promote the celebration of diversity of opinion in the local church.The second set of three study units presents a psychological explanation for diversity in the church based on the personality type theory of Carl G. Jung. Unit four contains an introduction to Jung and his type theory, style, and religious attitude. Unit five is a detailed explication of psychological type.  Unit six offers descriptions of the sixteen psychological types isolated by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.The final three study units present applications of psychological type theory to three areas of significant diversity in the church. Unit seven addresses differences in worship and prayer styles. Unit eight investigates different approaches to biblical interpretation. By professing faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and through the public ritual of baptism, believers become citizens of God's rule and disciples of Christ with all the faithful.  From this understanding issues a corollary supposition that relationships are to be loving, forgiving, respectful, and non-manipulative, embodying Jesus' example.  The ministry challenge addressed in this thesis project is a congregation composed of closed, enmeshed, manipulative family and friend relationships resistant to the admission of newcomers.
