The polycentric model is where the 'mother' church and a cluster of one or more 'ethnic' churches operate separately on the same campus. Very few of these churches have transitioned to become truly multiracial and continue to either decline or plateau. This dissertation examines the history, underlying assumptions, possible influence, and effectiveness of polycentric churches, and provides a critique of such churches against a theological backdrop. The dissertation's goal is to educate and persuade racially homogeneous churches, in general, and polycentric churches, in particular, to consider transitioning toward multiracial congregations in order to achieve real church health and growth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132589445087232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:05:47.832Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:14:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:20:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cbfe849b-4675-4eed-b1ee-8f6e10490243","accessControl_ssim":["d2f2f463-9740-4509-a4a4-216e3780bea1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Facing the giant: preacher, take up your slingshot: preaching and consumer culture"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:14:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:59:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cdb313b7-662e-453c-872c-e4510287cace"],"hasLease_ssim":["9a941e50-496c-4ee5-bc62-e154b99f843d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Iliff School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard F Ward"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Marti Su Zimmerman"],"publisher_tesim":["Iliff School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Consumption (Economics)","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Consumer culture is the water in which modern American congregations and preacher swim. This thesis examines the intertwining of images and identities within consumer culture, noting that Christian women may not differ from their non-Christian counterparts in their responses to the images surrounding them. A survey of Christian college women was qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. The findings suggest tension between consumerism and Christianity, the negative impact of images in consumer culture on Christian women's perception of their bodies, and that the church has not been a helpful resource for most of the sample population of women in comabtting the assumptions of consumer culture."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130250334175232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:28:37.082Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:44:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:45:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"10b39b58-e302-4b69-9ac5-12c7252bd892","accessControl_ssim":["cc337256-1605-45c0-beb9-d663fac1a017"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Sabbath practice as a resistance to consumerism: a Lentan experiment in congregational Sabbath practice"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:44:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:36:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0aa8a47f-e202-4cc7-8a75-948d0b70b401"],"hasLease_ssim":["009d5304-37ec-45e7-abbd-acdf7d621739"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stanley P Saunders"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David A Holmes"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Consumption (Economics)","Church and social problems--United Church of Christ","Sabbath","Robert McClure United Church (Calgary, Alta)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The unsustainable consumer culture that dominates North American society empowers, and is empowered by, a particular spirituality.
