It is the author's contention that the denomination has within its own history and theology the very means by which such renewal may be effected. The Presbyterian controversy of the 1920s-1930s, which split the church over issues of modernism and fundamentalism, will be explored. Focus is on Edward H. Rian, who followed J. Gresham Machen out of the PCUSAS in 1936, but later returned. The reasons for his returning provide a framework for thinking about renewal in the PCUSA today.
