This work explores how systems theory can be employed by the pastor to help the couple understand the covenants in which they were nurtured and still participate. The pastoral or hermeneutic circle was used as the author's methodology. This begins in pastor's experience of preparing couples for marriage. The next element in this process was social analysis in which the author explored those elements of family systems theory and technique which were useful to the marriage preparation. Then, the author engaged in theological reflection using the biblical concept of covenant as how notion of covenant can be beneficial for defining and interpreting contemporary Christian marriage. Lastly, a model of marriage preparation using family systems theory as well as the idea of covenant from a systems perspective is illustrated. A framework was offered along with tools and techniques for actual sessions with couples."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131012236836864,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:40:43.689Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:24:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:57:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b22092d0-59ce-4c89-846e-d303d1c6da46","accessControl_ssim":["3a89805b-d4fa-46d2-9867-6d9c5d4e337f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Making ethical medical decisions: a model of clinical ethics and covenantal theology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:24:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:16:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b51af649-5f41-43d2-b112-acbde3c6aae7"],"hasLease_ssim":["cee303e5-8ba9-40be-86cc-a047b157e330"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Dan Rhoades"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Barry B Heath"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Covenants--Religious aspects--Christianity","Medical ethics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The clinical ethics decision making model developed by Jonsen, Siegler and Winslade can be enhanced by an incorporation of a covenantal ethic and theology. People are seeking such a fellowship and when the covenant fellowship is not found in a particular congregation, seekers look elsewhere. The ministry challenge addressed by this thesis is the intentional introduction and cultivation of interventions to develop characteristics which will move an aggregate congregation toward becoming a covenant fellowship, thus becoming more attractive to the seekers as well as more responsive to their needs. The conclusions reached in this study are that it is possible to create those physical characteristics of a covenant fellowship within a congregation which make a difference in retaining active members. Ultimately, however, the covenant fellowship can only be created by the power of the Holy Spirit."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128303777611776,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:57:40.701Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:39:28Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:34:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2ca5d66b-48f6-4812-a265-a7a05f40764d","accessControl_ssim":["d0199204-b8a2-42dc-9b6d-f17416353c7f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Membership as covenant faithfulness: an experiential model"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:39:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:25:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d7f60212-93ad-47ef-b959-fa4d72745bd6"],"hasLease_ssim":["30fc9e64-8ba4-4d53-9afc-ac00657a9469"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas E Wingeier"],"year_tesim":["1991"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Barrie M Tritle"],"publisher_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Covenants--Religious aspects--Christianity","Christian education of adults","Church membership","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This report documents the theoretical foundation, design, and implementation of a six-session initiation experience for new church members at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church.
