Wallace Hamilton an effective deductive preacher so that contemporary preachers may improve the effectiveness of their own preaching. This project also discloses the characteristics of Hamilton's preaching, which would be ineffective for the contemporary preacher. Fred Craddock's inductive preaching method informs my critique of Hamilton. Research for this project includes interviews with those who heard Hamilton preach, analysis of Hamilton's sermons, and feedback from those who listened to sermons by Hamilton and Craddock. This project concludes that Hamilton's deductive method of preaching is still effective for today's preacher."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127865474940928,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:50:42.703Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:51:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:24:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a40647c3-a1f6-45a9-bbd5-051c395f8fc0","accessControl_ssim":["aa440cca-20f9-41b3-8430-a3011cb2077b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["When listeners create meaning, how then does one preach?"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:51:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:54:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["740bc24d-6dc4-42e2-a808-0bf384490e92"],"hasLease_ssim":["e55995b9-5b47-43ec-b8f8-47119e3041b7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Craig A Satterlee"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Glenn Luther Monson"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Craddock, Fred B","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this thesis is to suggest helpful criteria for preachers who view their listeners as co-creators of meaning during the sermon event. The underlying conviction of this thesis--that listeners are always co-creators of meaning along with the preacher in any sermon event--is based upon data collected during a three-year preaching project, and upon the work of a number of contemporary homileticians. The main thesis builds on the work of Fred Craddock who viewed the purpose of the sermon as 'getting something heard.' Going a step beyond Craddock's work, this thesis suggests that 'getting something created' is a helpful way of defining the purpose of preaching when listeners in the consciousness of homileticians is a central part of this thesis, which then leads to the conclusions of this thesis, that humility, imagination, and a 'catalytic consciousness' are essential qualities of preaching in the postmodern period."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133760408780800,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:24.550Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:45:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"35a34b98-6bdc-4629-9872-1d58bdc250fa","accessControl_ssim":["0c5f6446-eca5-4b57-b804-ce5096cda2ea"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching for discipleship in postmodernity: the problem of authority"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:40:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["35ebc9b1-f9aa-4671-bced-1383172d123c"],"hasLease_ssim":["132f25a3-fb0d-4af0-8503-da6c5a871e04"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott Black Johnston"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Reed E Jaboro"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Craddock, Fred B","Postmodernism","Ambiguity","Preaching","Tracy, David W"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The relationship between the preacher and the listener has changed dramatically over the past fifty years. Postmodern philosophers of language have elucidated the idea that the reader or listener hold many of the keys to authority rather than the author or speaker as was previously espoused. Thus, this project seeks to explore the important role that context plays upon the way preachers go about attending to their task of communicating in the postmodern era. The project explores Fred Craddock's thesis regarding the inductive method of preaching and its continued viability. The project also examines the sociological issues impacting the preacher who would speak a word into the postmodern situation. The author utilizes the framework of David Tracy's theological revisionism to develop how the preacher might approach the world with the gospel message in an intellectually honest manner amidst a world filled with ambiguity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135121388077056,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:46:02.481Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:03:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:04:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b055123c-5779-4d93-8d03-b23bbc83cf66","accessControl_ssim":["4fe8f6da-ee2b-49e5-858b-d01c4f0b3d6e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Something old, something new: a deductionist's journey to inductive preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:03:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:13:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["014877fe-611c-4446-b554-9de11558fcc1"],"hasLease_ssim":["0553ffd6-bd19-4c87-b83a-f1ee35d9e5ff"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Emmanuel School of Religion"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce E Shields"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Billy W Jones"],"publisher_tesim":["Emmanuel School of Religion"],"subject_tesim":["Craddock, Fred B","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project seeks to answer the question, Can Dr. Fred Craddock's indirect (often referred to as inductive) method of preaching be taught?
