In that conversation, we are invited into God's mission (missio dei) as partners. The thesis 'listens in' on conversation between two 'twin' congregations: St James United Church in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, and Webster Memorial United Church in Kingston, Jamaica. A detailed history of the emergence of the partnership concept, a description of the contexts of the two congregations and an extensive report of the conversations, leads to the conclusion that ongoing cross-cultural experience enables a lively opportunity for understanding God's mission today."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126860292161536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:34:44.086Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:14:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:33:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1c151b49-8883-479c-8c4a-19b8fbbce663","accessControl_ssim":["dfeb23ba-3f4f-4951-8d5c-835784755a5a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Affirming our diversity: a lenten Bible study on Romans in a cross-cultural pastoral setting"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:14:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:57:33Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dcad7311-b10b-458d-9aa2-3b57c2380e2d"],"hasLease_ssim":["15830aef-11fc-4c4d-ab4f-cc4a30854c24"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas E Wingeier"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sylvia F Williams-Pleas"],"publisher_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Cultural pluralism","Cross-cultural studies","Bible--Study","Bible. A six-week Bible study on the epistle to the Romans was employed as a paradigmatic tool (model and story) for change. Dividing the participants into groups patterned after projected Christian locations in first-century Rome, the pastor alternately discussed Paul as a paradigm for herself, and guided the participants in discussing the epistle text. Intrinsic individualism in both Lao and American cultures militates against spiritual formation, promoting divisions between various spheres of life and tending to divorce God from a central place in human life. A bicultural, bilingual team is aiding a Midwest congregation in their spiritual formation. Together with Lao and Americans, they studied and acted on the nature of the church using a Reformed tradition and a model of human culture to interpret the nature of the church. Members of the team learned: a universal model of human cultures is essential to understanding each other; transcultural metaphors of the church are helpful for spiritual insights; and people in both cultures must respect, strengthen, modify and amalgamate their unique cultural realities to generate Christian formation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128427359633408,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:59:38.558Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Robert C Malcolm","hits":1,"label":"Robert C Malcolm"},{"value":"Steven J Chambers","hits":1,"label":"Steven J Chambers"},{"value":"Sylvia F Williams-Pleas","hits":1,"label":"Sylvia F Williams-Pleas"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Theology, Reformed","hits":1,"label":"Theology, Reformed"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Cross-cultural studies","hits":3,"label":"Cross-cultural studies"},{"value":"Bible--Study","hits":1,"label":"Bible--Study"},{"value":"Bible.
