Intrinsic individualism in both Lao and American cultures militates against spiritual formation, promoting divisions between various spheres of life and tending to divorce God from a central place in human life.  A bicultural, bilingual team is aiding a Midwest congregation in their spiritual formation.  Together with Lao and Americans, they studied and acted on the nature of the church using a Reformed tradition and a model of human culture to interpret the nature of the church. This presents a tremendous challenge and opportunity for the church in general, and for the African-American and Hispanic church in the Washington Metropolitan context in particular, to be involved in cross-cultural evangelism.  This project presupposes that cross-cultural evangelism will enhance positive social interaction between the two communities while highlighting the universality of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The Great Commission is our mandate to evangelize cross-culturally. In doing so it will challenge social and political structures that create and tolerate poverty, civil strife, racism, sexism, and nationalistic egoism.  The research model was in the form of a case study and survey.  A questionnaire was disseminated to two local congregations in the Washington, DC area, one Hispanic and one African-American. The resulting data was analyzed to identify the present attitudes of both groups. The secondary goal was to discover significant elements in the experience for the purpose of redesigning the event so that the potential for Christian growth might be maximized.  The first learning was that the measurement of significant changes in Christian maturity requires a longer period of time than a one week experience.  The second learning was the surprise: participants dislearned.  They were apparently less sure of answers to questions after the event than they were before it.  The project demonstrated for Presbyterian Border Ministry some of the ways in which its immersion events are flawed. Building upon a theoretical base, four case studies were conducted allowing present cross-cultural workers to evaluate classroom and seminar training in a variety of areas and to list areas in which training is needed. The resulting model is of a school with a strong emphasis upon cross-cultual training in the regular curriculum, on-campus short courses, and external seminars.
