Some members take the 'traditional' approach, seeking God's individual will in their lives. Others take the 'way of wisdom', seeking wise decisions in their choices. Blending the two approaches has led to difficulties at Grace. In this paper, the author contends that the 'way of wisdom' best reflects a biblical model of decision-making. He designed this dissertation to explore the impact of a traditional view upon many of the church's members. In-depth interviews were conducted with 25 members of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) located in Crookston, Minnesota. The two topics of hearing the voice of God in community and consensus-based decision-making were explored. An action plan for the future ministry of the church was developed. The objective was to develop a deeper personal relationship with God and one another by becoming more attentive to God. The team was guided through one action research cycle using the spiritual practices of silence and solitude, reflection and journaling, prayer and Lectio Divina for twenty weeks. Data was gathered through written narratives and group interviews and analyzed by qualitative methods. The research indicated that through intentional fostering of individual intimacy with God, an ardent team emerged to corporately provide more discerning spiritual leadership. A qualitative research methodology was utilized to field-test an integrated approach to prayer and planning in three different settings. AI is a process that can lead to vision discernment by building on past successes and creating a sense of missional alignment. AI is based on organizational and social theory that, when combined with theological understandings, provide the church and leadership with a methodology for discernment that will engage a large portion of a congregation. This is a grounded study that engaged a 1200+ membership church in a large AI. Using randomly sent surveys to pastors, I sought to elicit their experience of a discernment process.  The survey results showed that 60% did not receive any help in discerning God's calling to pastoral leadership. The project shows how congregations discern God's lead in decision making through their daily life situation, social contexts, and various other circumstances.  The central task of this project is to trace the path of the planning process that KUMCGW pursued to discern God's plan and analyze the various factors that worked together to attain it.  With biblical, theological, and historical research, the varied ways of discernment are summed up in two categories: the realistic/rationalistic way and the pietistic/mystical way of discernment.
