The reported divorce rate ranges between 30-50%. Separation and divorce is disrupting the stability of the family and its members, including Christian homes. Many couples, finding the prospect of marriage to be risky, are opting to cohabitate to test their relationships, which increases the potential for divorce should they marry. However, research shows that healthy, satisfying marriages have positive benefits for those couples and their children. Some couples that seek counseling for their marriage problems are able to adjust well and rebuild their marital relationships, while others are not. An interpretive phenomenological analysis examined the lived experiences of six couples, who were nominated by mental health professionals and confirmed by the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, as couples who achieved positive relationship outcomes following marriage counseling. In-depth semistructured interviews were conducted, and a conceptual mapping task was completed, for each participating couple. After a rigorous analysis of the data, four significant themes emerged. Achieving healthy relationship functioning for couples following marriage counseling involves: (a) improving their communication, (b) being willing to work on their relationship, (c) accepting their partners for who they are, and (d) relying on their faith as a resource. The results of this study may have important implications for couples in marriage counseling, as well as those working with couples: counselors, therapists, pastors, medical practitioners, community organizations, and faith-based organizations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Denver Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7af129f-938f-4821-9463-dc6ded35d563"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133654514139136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:22:43.561Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:21:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:40:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1db6ade1-9a6a-4e4b-bd1e-3425d0c0dcae","accessControl_ssim":["61e13310-1f54-462e-9c47-818419af6fab"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'Building healthier marriages in a military community'"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:21:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:00:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["64d99bb6-f8dc-494f-aab3-8c8e1ec05f04"],"hasLease_ssim":["03e9d67c-fb8f-4510-b357-cc8d8d358c58"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael S. Chapter five will specifically highlight key lessons learned about this redemptive journey."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132635897004032,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:06:32.132Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:56:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:48:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"836acbd9-aa58-40dc-b8b5-78bc148eb6ef","accessControl_ssim":["658e4e0b-2316-4f18-85b4-eae24957ccf8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Family in crisis: the effects of divorce and remarriage on the family system"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:56:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:00:35Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7716cac0-4026-440e-bc2d-ba5ada988cd9"],"hasLease_ssim":["53823ce5-8090-4105-ba31-2ac015c425c6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Sidney L Bradley"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jacqueline J Puz"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with families","Sexual ethics","Theological anthropology--Biblical teaching","Family--Biblical teaching","Theology","Pastoral counseling","Divorce"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the integration of the theology and psychology involved in helping a family in crisis. A ministry model is developed based on the author's experience of an unusually high number of divorces in a church where he served; an analysis of biblical teaching on marriage, divorce, and remarriage; interviews with divorced Christians active in local churches; interviews with pastors and parachurch workers who have experience counseling the divorced; and research in the field. The development of the model also drew from an analysis of a local parachurch divorce recovery ministry and from research on the social and psychological impact of divorce on the church. Several misconceptions are revealed about the divorce experience, social consequences, and ministry to the divorced. Outlines are used to develop a paradigm for ministry to the divorced and remarried that can be used by evangelical churches with varying theological assumptions about divorce, as well as by churches of varying sizes."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130781881466880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:37:04.005Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:19:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:22:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"65c4bab9-ce6b-4345-b8c6-3d7214ee69b5","accessControl_ssim":["dfc1b24c-8aba-428c-9305-056fcc599bbb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of the Fresh Start Program in the context of the Australian society"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:19:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:06:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c64375bb-aa39-48f7-b6b6-5b1c85405f26"],"hasLease_ssim":["cc334c9e-20f5-4c46-8895-56328e63866c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Joan B Winfrey"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"location_tesim":["Queensland"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert L Carner"],"publisher_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Marriage","Remarriage","Divorce"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis is a combination of 'historical-descriptive' and 'action' research.
