This project proposes that the class-leader system can be a viable part of the AME Church, but it must be modified and shaped into a contemporary mechanism for ministry.  Lack of training of class leaders in Allen Chapel AME Church, Northampton County, North Carolina, proved to be the rule rather than the exception. The church was thereby rendered ineffective in its ministry. The project seeks practical ways to equip class leaders of Allen Chapel AME Church for effective ministry by formulating and administering a training program for class leaders. The project explores roles and expectations of motherhood as well as examining definitions of family.  It details the dilemmas for a mother who tries to parent when not physically present in her household; the dilemmas that she faces in confronting attitudes of judgment and prejudice; the dilemmas presented by feelings of guilt, rejection, and abandonment. The project enlisted church members to lead students--new Christians--through a five-week study of worship, fellowship, Bible, prayer, and witnessing.  Those who completed the project felt that a meaningful relationship had been established between student and mentor and that the students (new Christians) had increased in their understanding of the material studied. Will they be able to live more consistently as Christian disciples in the world? This project seeks to answer these questions a pretest/posttest questionnaire administered to 68 laypersons.  The experimental group of 34 persons received six hours of theological instruction. The control group of 34 persons received no instruction. This project conducted inductive study of the Bible with 16 Native American students attending American Indian College in Spring 1995. A local church educator should provide a Christian education plan that fosters faith maturity and is indigenous to resources, holistic in strategy, and balanced in scope.
