In Jungian psychology 'shadow' describes the usually unacknowledged, nondominant aspects of personality that energize behavior in dangerous and unpredictable ways. Preachers can learn to use this energy to enliven preaching that takes all of the 'voices' seriously. The 'mandorla' where ego and shadow overlap provides a helpful place for preachers to stand and to learn."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133756819505153,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:21.127Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:18:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3da1ddd2-ccc8-46f9-a8d1-4e9b08f5e53f","accessControl_ssim":["ee7a4cf6-03fe-42f9-aad3-dda0540d0e81"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The relationship between psychotherapy and spiritual direction"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:55:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9707ca73-6728-43b8-b9ae-0a9a94d92752"],"hasLease_ssim":["545f7899-a363-438e-86c4-c2cfefdca89e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Huss"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Laurel Artress Ulrich"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Consciousness","Ego (Psychology)","Spiritual direction","Schaef, Anne Wilson","Psychotherapy","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project focuses on the process behind the process of psychotherapy and spiritual direction. Using the concept of 'levels of truth' from Anne Wilson Schaef's book, Women's Reality, as the organizational backbone, three levels of relationships are addressed. Level one outlines the congruent interface between psychotherapy and spiritual direction where emotional needs and the spiritual search are one in the same. Level two outlines the incongruent areas where both disciplines stand in a relationship of tension. Four areas are explored: awakened consciousness, ego-negation, self-knowledge, and discernment. The bridge building chapter integrates the theory of Winnicott, Rizzuto, and Meissner with the thinking of Needleman, Edwards and Jones. Level three is a synthesis of both disciplines. The common meeting ground is in Winnicott's 'potential space'."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133371019034625,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:13.199Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:01:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:22:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4510c57e-5769-4ed9-8698-b788c6ddf43a","accessControl_ssim":["ab819c88-9365-40d2-9edf-b4ecc8f796d3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Games churches play (evaluating congregational life in the Presbytery of the Palisades using transactional analysis)"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:01:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:08:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["68a715a0-f30a-4412-a585-8444e7205aae"],"hasLease_ssim":["314d626d-625f-4370-aa70-8915af2e212d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald P Smith"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert Glen Walkley"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral theology","Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","Presbytery of the Palisades","Congregations","Presbyterian Church","Ego (Psychology)","Christian life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project hypothesis is that persons use neurotic reasoning to fill individual ego needs at the expense of others, as do groups of church people who act out inappropriate theology in order to suit their own ego needs. It was the writer's hypothesis that by helping the participants change the way they thought about themselves, they would change the way they felt about themselves. Working from a meaning orientation, an integrating modality is developed following Erikson's theory in which the polarities of the final stage are seen as ego integrity or despair. As the past is reviewed the meaning of various situations and events can be reorganized and reintegrated into a more valid picture, giving new meaning to one's life and allowing the sense of ego integrity.
