The purpose is to develop more precision in understanding the mission of the church and to provide a more systematic approach for accomplishing the mission founded upon the commissioning statements of our Lord, 'Go' and 'Follow me'.  An extensive training program for the development of the elders was established covering the areas of being called, history, teaching, flocking, prayer, creative listening, leadership, and gifts and talents.  The foundation undergirding this study was learning responsibility and accountability. The purpose of this handbook was to develop a handbook that could be used in training lay elders. The primary research method used was 'Creative Studies'.  'Documentary Studies' were used employing 'The Library Survey Method' to develop the material in the handbook.  Disciplines used included scripture, early church history, practical theology, and behavioral science. A theological understanding of life, death and ministry was developed from biblical and secular sources.  Divided into six sessions, the educational experience utilized group discussion, audio-visual presentations, simulations, and visitation. Templer's 'Death Anxiety Scale' and subjective self-reporting were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational experience. The data was collected from sixty randomly selected ruling elders who answered the questionnaire.  It was discovered that there is a higher correlation between specific academic training and good performance than between life experiences and good performances.  One must not conclude that good academic training will cause outstanding elder performance. There may be a third factor influencing both.  A supplement to the study itself provides a theological framework for the raw data. Generally speaking, the traditional approach has been for churches to form a nominating committee.  The committee then picks the best available men in the church, the congregation or Board of Elders then votes on and appoints these men to the Board.  The problem with this approach is that it does nothing to prepare men for the most important position that a human being can hold: an elder or overseer of the church of God. This, from a practical standpoint, must involve training and discipleship. The author studied the role and qualifications of the office of bishop/presbyter explicated in First Timothy, and in the early vision of the founders of the Stone/Campbell movement. Based on that research, he argues that the role of the elder is to live a life worthy of being imitated and to be capable of articulating the faith embodied by that life. A survey was conducted of Alliance churches and their practice of training nominating committees which demonstrated that there was little or no training taking place. A training manual and video training tape was produced and implemented in three Alliance churches over a period of one year. A pre-test and post-test study was conducted to determine the program effectiveness.
