With an examination of existing literature the report began with a historical, theological, anthropological, and missiological prolegomena. The actual project consisted of forty-five in-depth interviews with three generations of Saxons from Kitchener-Waterloo and Aylmer, Ontario. The key conclusion of the research was that the role of the church has substantially deteriorated among all generations of Saxons. When older Saxons insisted on speaking German in club and church, they excluded their younger generation from participation and leadership. Various issues involved in the topic of immigration are considered in order to provide the reader with a substantive amount of needed variables, which contribute to the formation of the complexity that is characteristic of this theme, with the goal of taking a better informed position. Using Dr. Eldin Villafañe's 'Hermeneutical Circle,' this document starts with a clarification of the problem, mining information from observations, experience and written materials. It progresses to a conceptualization of the issue, presented by a literature review, a theology of urban ministry applied to immigration, and the proposal of a strategy for church implementation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131954177900544,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:41.994Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:58:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:55:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a61ff205-7e03-4851-8995-03e8c6661c4b","accessControl_ssim":["6754dede-320e-410d-8dcc-b9862f6772c7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["the role of education as a tool for advancing the social and spiritual needs of first-generation immigrants: El Tabern√°sculo Evangelico, a case study"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:58:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:57:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8331783a-59c9-411d-87b1-0d3608d833cc"],"hasLease_ssim":["2bd20860-b3cd-4205-9d19-de497fb5e186"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Eldin Villafañe"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David Martinez"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Emigration and immigration","Hispanic Americans","Christian education","Church and the world"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Hispanic evangelical churches, especially those made up of recent immigrants, are experiencing a major change from their traditionally religious role in Latino society. It opens with the Spirit of God moving or migrating across the face of the waters and ends with the book of Revelation being written by John while he is in exile on the isle of Patmos. The key event for Christians is the birth of Jesus, the refugee Christ. The text outlines the migration narrative and compares and contrasts the relationship between the treatment of migrants, immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers of today with those of that time period. The predominant term used for these groups in the text is 'strangers.' Theologically, the text develops the need for and method to practice inclusive hospitality in response to the strangers in the United States during the 21st century. Inclusive hospitality is developed by embracing the diversity of the Trinity and the teachings of the Bible. God, the creator, repeatedly mandates hospitality to strangers in the Hebrew Bible. Christ Jesus comes as the refugee, migrant, stranger and, in addition, models acceptance of and hospitality towards strangers. The Holy Spirit is presently with us, sent by Christ to guide and direct our response in the kairos moment in which we live. God continues to come as the stranger and we are challenged to respond with inclusive hospitality. The theology of the mystic Howard Thurman is also used to aid in responding to the strangers in the land. In responding, the decision to choose between God's law and man's law sometimes becomes a necessity. This issue is addressed with a chapter that provides an overview of immigration law to aid in understanding present-day immigration questions. In addition to providing information on immigrants, migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, the text offers a variety of teaching and worship materials. These include studies on the variety of immigrants, worship materials, general information, and three educational programs. They are a seven-session study that gives an overview of the immigration categories; a five-session study, 'Immigration: blessing or curse,' which seeks to have the participants decide; and a refugee study guide for children, youth, and adults. In addition, other educational materials are provided to facilitate an understanding of the importance of developing a theology of inclusive hospitality to welcome the strangers in the land -- because once we were strangers in the land of Egypt."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720892360556544,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:13:11.744Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:34:24Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:54:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"51900ab3-a519-4e68-8527-5c93b4c956db","accessControl_ssim":["9d17d90d-34bb-4677-b0c7-de02d37e523c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Servant model of pastoral leadership: toward an effective ministry in the Korean American Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:34:23Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:31:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["09d815bf-351a-4fe6-9aed-54dec7d30ffb"],"hasLease_ssim":["97feddeb-cc3f-4a8d-bc91-2dcb8dd0b55f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Stephen S Kim"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jinho Han"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Korean Americans","Emigration and immigration","Service (Theology)","Clergy--Office"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study seeks to understand the Korean American Church and attempts to justify the servant model of pastoral leadership. The Korean immigrants have experienced great growth since they first came to Hawaii in 1903. The Korean church in America has also undergone tremendous growth. First of all, this study presents the history of Korean immigration to the United States and the accompanying growth of the church in various stages from 1903 to the present. In addition, the study analyzes the results of a survey on what kind of leadership Korean American church congregation members desire. Many of Korean American church congregation members want the servant leadership model for their pastors because they have difficulty adapting to their new life in America. They suffer physical and mental stresses and depression arising from life as a minority group in a foreign land. Therefore, the study examines the meaning of servanthood in the New Testament and biblical perspectives in general on servant leadership."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131865456836608,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:17.383Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:30:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:39:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5663b19e-63ef-4aa5-ac5c-41314fe23f80","accessControl_ssim":["8d9f37f3-ff7c-427f-a0dc-1447257f9381"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The role of the Brazilian churches as therapeutic communities to first generation Brazilian immigrants"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:30:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:40:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f2cec5b1-b217-4ee9-9b85-1ad89ac8eefc"],"hasLease_ssim":["8ec467c2-b700-40c1-951c-f0c35bde0a1b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Manoel Oliveira"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Assimilation (Sociology)","Emigration and immigration","Brazilian Americans","Therapeutic communities","Church work with immigrants"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This research is a systemic study that seeks to address how the Brazilian churches can function as therapeutic communities in the lives of first-generation Brazilian immigrants and aid in the healing process of the many socio-psychological disorders developed during the immigration process. A primary premise of this research is that ethnic churches -- in this particular case, Brazilian churches -- have the potential of greatly helping immigrants to adapt to their new environment and to counteract the stress of the immigration experience, assimilation and adaptation (introduction and chapter one). This work was developed following a systemic approach and guided by three nurturing questions that originated from Eldin Villafañe's 'hermeneutical circle of social ethics' (clarification, conceptualization and confrontation). Pastoral actions and reflections on dealing with the issues related to this study emerged from our understanding of systematic theology and the investigation of other pertinent sources (chapters two and three). The goal of the learning team and the exercise called 'hexagon process' was to look at how these Brazilian churches can develop ministries that will create positive and lasting results, and the possible scenarios where the ethnic churches can intervene (chapter four). Outcome and further researches were suggested with the intent of broadening the understanding in the field of ethnic churches and how to help post first generation immigrants (chapter five)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130919833174016,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:15.565Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:48:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:35:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5382dfaf-7ddd-44b5-a62f-751a9538ea88","accessControl_ssim":["74dcb646-3beb-4870-b018-e2f4cea3e419"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The strategy of developing Mandarin ministry in Cantonese churches in Toronto"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:48:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:34:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4d3d4153-ac7e-409c-b092-b10789bb4b33"],"hasLease_ssim":["8110e643-6871-44dc-8e6e-717202fe028c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Logos Evangelical Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Wilfred Su"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["Canada","Ontario--Toronto"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joseph Chi-Keung Wong"],"publisher_tesim":["Logos Evangelical Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Chinese","Emigration and immigration","Church history"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this thesis is first to analyze the immigration influx from Mainland China in order to sound the urgent wake up call to the Cantonese-speaking Chinese Churches in Toronto.
