In a postmodern context, preaching that evokes an experiential encounter with biblical truth is most effective.  A survey of 127 preachers, mostly from the Assemblies of God, and a separate survey of 33 teachers of preaching, investigated their opinions and practices regarding the use of emotional appeal in preaching.  The research discloses that a substantial majority of both preachers and teachers consider emotional appeal in preaching important for effective communication. This work describes five benefits of appealing to the emotions in preaching, offers guidance on preparing to preach with emotional impact, and instructs on infusing the message with emotion by using imagination, metaphor, story and celebration. By studying what these members felt and when they felt it, how the leaders of the congregations responded, and the lingering consequences of their loss of confidence, the project hopes to inform, direct, and encourage other congregations facing similar crises. To do this, three self-select groups (well-parented, dysfunctionally parented and reparented respondents) were all given a combination 'questionnaire-interview' (based primarily on the thinking of Kohut, Winnicott and Langs) and the MMPI.  Results were sought on seven specific MMPI scales.  Although the research hypotheses were not proved using these seven scales, several unhypothesized findings were worthwhile: there were correlations between the self-select group and overall health through general impressions of the whole of MMPI profiles looking at all the scales together. This project is an historical overview of Seventh-Day Adventist and African religious culture, seeking to extract the principal tenets of each tradition to blend them into a more dynamic worship style that is appealing to the African American community and faithful to the traditions and objectives of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church at the same time.  This project suggests that since traditional Black Seventh-Day Adventist public evangelism typically combines 'the truth' (rationality) with rhythm (emotion), by coloring the weekly worship service with these elements, a dynamic worship style could result. This thesis project will propose a theory of emotional bonding based on the work of selected contemporary psychologists, and will apply that theory by means of a series of preaching tools.  Finally, the theory will be tested by means of a workshop developed for deaconate candidates.  Chapters One and Two addressed the theory of emotion and the understanding of the emotional bonding process.  Chapters Three and Four define and explain how metaphor, illustration, storytelling, self-disclosure, and humor work individually and collectively to create emotional bonding between preacher and congregation.  These two chapters explore the value and relevancy of these methods to the homiletic process. In Chapter Five the elements discussed in Chapters One-Four are integrated within the context of the deacons' workshop.
