Fourthly, each step of the project is presented beginning with the selection of churches and continuing through the project until concluding with the formal presentation. Small congregations experience these times intensely because of their fewer resources. A survey of Unitarian Universalist congregations of less than 100 members was conducted about how their endowments were managed considering  identity and context. Generally, these congregations were in trouble with declining memberships, inaction toward changes in community context, and poor endowment management. Endowments were managed mostly independent of any sense of congregational narratives-the expressions of the congregations' identities and purposes. The research methodology included a ten-question survey that was sent to Southern Baptist foundation senior leaders, as well as senior leaders of other denominational foundations. This project aims to assist local churches in developing a philosophy of endowment usage and in identifying proper legal terminology to assist them in directing such gifts work at home and abroad.  The project surveys churches with endowment funds in existence.  Copies of legal documents, histories of funds from their inception, mechanics of annual interest distribution, and documentation of effects on local ministries were assembled and evaluated. By means of literary research and a survey of 117 individuals representing endowed United Churches of Christ, the study gathered data on wealth and descriptive statistics on church vitality.  The survey acquired information through mail response and by interview. The study registered a surprising rate of return and generally resulted in a favorable response to the practice of endowment. These were based on the biblical concept of the tithe, the stewardship teachings of Jesus and Paul, a theology of money, and various psychological motivations. The process included outside consultation, a four-session study course and five sermons on stewardship.  The pre- and post-course evaluation demonstrated that the study course significantly changed beliefs about stewardship and tithing, and promoted participation in the endowment fund. This project is a study of endowments and how the presence of endowed wealth affects local congregations.  The context for the study is expressed as a narrative account of a middle-sized parish and the experience it has had in living with endowed wealth.  Applied to the context are congregational studies findings in regard to endowed churches, and a biblical studies component in examining the resources of faith.
