The course, 'Storying for evangelism and church planting', is designed to be taught by the LEAD team of the International Mission Board in eleven countries of Asia where the predominant religions are Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam.  This project will produce a textbook to be included in the twenty-four subject LEAD seminar curriculum which gives basic leadership training to mostly untrained, recently converted and called pastors, evangelists, and church planters.  The writer will teach the subject in selected seminar locations during the Fall 2002 semester in South Asia. Ch.1 introduces the purpose and goals of the project. It further acquaints the reader with the context of the ministry research project. Ch.2 is the biblical and theological base of the project. Specifically the chapter examines the people of God as a kingdom of priests, the power of the Holy Spirit in evangelicalism, the implications of spiritual gifts in doing evangelism, and a strategy for doing evangelism. Ch.3 begins with a survey of some past and current methods employed by Southern Baptists in doing evangelism before undertaking a study of the people a church is trying to reach. The last section of ch.3 explores how a church might effectively reach secular people. Ch.4 is the report of the project telling how a church sought to impact the lives of people, but that it is gifted to do the task. Are these new believers moved by the Holy Spirit or other spirits?  A massive spiritual awakening is presently underway in China.  This thesis explores its development and maintains that it is genuinely of the Holy Spirit using criteria from Jonathan Edwards' treatises, Distinguishing marks and Religious affections. The strategy emerged from research that included interviews, extant literature, and observation of the Nation of Islam that uncovered those factors that contribute to black male aversion to church. The project concluded that the primary deterrent to black male church participation was the failure of the black church to develop and implement outreach strategies. Methods: The author conducted a case study of the International Christian Fellowship of Caracas and a survey of forty-two other expatriate ministries in order to evaluate the missionary potential of international churches. Included is a theological and theoretical search for a model of expatriate ministry that can be used in outreach to indigenous peoples that leads to the planting of a national church. The author examines the major cultural and philosophical themes of postmodernism through the lens of popular music. Two common evangelical responses to postmodernism are appraised. A defense of evangelism is offered, based on Christian realism and the ontologically unique claims of Christ. Lesslie Newbigin's model of contextually-appropriate mission, as the encounter between Gospel, culture and church, is commended as an alternative to non-foundational pluralism.
