While personal evangelism is needed for penetration, mass evangelism is needed for impact upon an increasingly impersonal urban society.  A study of the methods of the early church, and the nineteenth and twentieth century church indicated that evangelism was most fruitful when both methods were employed.  The author attempted to restore the impact-penetration balance in his church's evangelistic ministry by leading it to conduct an outdoor evangelistic crusade. Sponsors serve as examples of lay persons recognizing the call to mission and evangelization.  They are a group in need of formation in mission and evangelization.  The educational design for RCIA sponsors focuses on the role of the lay person and the community in mission and evangelization, and also provides an opportunity for the sponsors to experience the tie between their actions on behalf of the candidates as well as the action of the community. There are three sections to the work: a comprehensive study of conversion from the biblical material through current history to the present; a consideration of the contextualization of the message of the good news within the Australian scene; and a field study questionnaire and in-depth interviews of the clergy within the diocese.  As a result of this study it was found that the ethos of the clergy is more diverse than at first thought and that a broader definition of conversion needed to be considered. In addition to a premeditation of the steps to be taken during the initial year of the church there is a chronicling of the implementation of this strategy integrated with a post-evaluation.  The available resources and the role of the sponsoring churches are discussed in the early chapters. Getting to know the target audience, allowing them exposure to the developing church, and effectively communicating the gospel are subsequent key areas covered.  Securing a response to Christ that grew out of understanding, and which took into account culturally appropriate patterns of decision-making was a major concern of the church planters. The paper recounts worship as it was honed in the Black religious American experience. African American Lutheran struggles with Eurocentric worship are explored.  Five worship models used in African American Lutheran circles are proposed. The posttest indicated an increase in the instructors' commitment to personal evangelism, flexibility in ministry and the use of sports as a viable tool in ministry.  The author and instructors designed and produced materials to be used in the sports clinics.
