A theoretical chapter argues that religious experiences are unique and qualitatively different from natural experiences without, on the opposite extreme, becoming irrelevant magical supernatural events.  Research, by test and interview, explored the relationship between religious experience and service.  Results: People from mainline churches claimed religious experiences that associate with natural reality and extend service that is humanistic and personal in orientation. The format is a series of four small group dialogues held in a local United Methodist church.  Changes of attitudes are measured by an instrument administered at the beginning and at the end of the dialogue process. The hypothesis was that persons who participated in the experience would be better equipped to provide leadership in the church.  Two groups participated:  a test group and a control group.  Both groups completed the Spiritual Leadership Qualities Inventory before and after the experience. The scores revealed improvement in seven of nineteen leadership characteristics in the test group. Eighty percent of the test group believed their readiness for leadership increased. The method of study used by the author was the pro-active model as outlined by William Myers in his book, Research in Ministry: A Primer for the Doctor of Ministry Program. The results of the research indicated that 50% of the participants who were not involved in ministries with the poor prior to the study-immersion experience became involved in such ministries following the experience. Additionally, 40% indicated that study alone provided such a motivation. 20% indicated that experience alone provided such a motivation, and 40% indicated that both study and experience led to such a change in their lives.
