This writer theorized that a preacher's homiletical skills would increase when exposed to an understanding of the various biblical genres.  The theory evolved into the development of a survey-style seminary course taught at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.  The data collected from the test instruments administered during the course supported this writer's theory.  Chapter 1 of this thesis-project presented the problem and its setting. The problem was the need for a survey-style preaching course from the perspective of the biblical genres, and the setting for the thesis-project was the Leveall College of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary located in Decatur, Georgia.  Chapters 2 and 3 detailed the theological framework for this thesis-project.  The framework included an understanding of expository preaching, holistic interpretation of the Scriptures, and the incorporation of the biblical genres into the art of expository preaching.  Chapter 4 presented the literature review for this thesis project.  Sidney Greidanus's The Modern Preacher and the Ancient Text served as the skeletal foundation for this thesis-project.  Chapter 5 detailed the implementation of the project, the teaching of a new survey-style preaching course. Third, the director developed sermons that helped grieving people to be comforted and facilitated them in their healing process.  This facilitation was accomplished by better understanding of the hope and comfort given in the Scriptures. Therefore, the preacher/pastor must include therapeutic sermons within the preaching calendar.  The purpose of this research was to focus on the necessity and the nature of preaching expository sermons that are therapeutic from biblical, theological, and historical perspectives.  The concept of therapeutic absorbency was introduced as being a necessary part of therapeutic preaching.  A defense of expository preaching as the appropriate method for preaching therapeutic sermons was also given.  The literature review integrated the contributions of authors on preaching and on preaching as it relates to pastoral care. This served as the basis for the development of a curriculum for a workshop. The conclusions reached demonstrate that improvements can be made in both exegetical and homiletical components of genuine expository preaching.  Other expository preachers are encouraged to involve themselves evermore in the consuming task of presenting the glory of God through the text of Holy Scripture. The author analyzed the need for such a project, set forth the theoretical base, addressed the challenge of communicating to the modern listener, and gave a detailed account of hermeneutical approaches to Genesis 1-11.
